Our take
The Double Down Surround layers a feather core inside a down shell. You sink into a soft surface but stop on a firmer center. Pacific Coast's own guidance says side sleepers usually need its Firm pillows, so this medium version suits average frames or side-and-back sleepers. Check the seller before buying, because the listing's byline reads 'Pacific Pillows'.
Pros
- Feather core adds support under a soft down surface
- Fill washed up to eight times in Pacific Coast's HyperClean process (brand claim)
- Marketed for back and side sleepers
- Classic hotel-style feel
Cons
- Medium support may be too soft for side sleepers (Pacific Coast's own FAQ says side sleepers usually need Firm)
- Expensive
- No RDS or OEKO-TEX claim on the listing
Is the “Pacific Pillows” listing the real Pacific Coast pillow?
Very likely yes, though Pacific Coast doesn't sell this model on its own site. The Amazon byline reads “Pacific Pillows,” but the listing's title is “Pacific Coast Double Down Surround Pillow Set,” its manufacturer part number is PCF-28311-2PK, and its copy names two Pacific Coast trademarks, Barrier Weave fabric and Hyperclean fill[1]. Pacific Coast's own store uses the same PCF prefix on its product codes today[2]. Its 2016 glossary describes Barrier Weave as a tightly woven fabric finished to keep down and feathers in, and HyperClean as its process of washing and rinsing the fill up to eight times[3]. The product description also matches, almost word for word, a retailer listing for the Pacific Coast Double Down Surround[4].
What we couldn't do is confirm current specs with the maker. Pacific Coast's online store doesn't list a Double DownSurround. Its current feather-and-down blend pillows include the 3 Chamber Feather DownAround instead[5]. Pacific Coast also warns that Amazon listings can differ from its own products in model, firmness and size[6].
The listing's own data doesn't fully agree with itself. A bullet gives the size as 20 by 26 inches, while the spec table says 22 by 18 inches and lists the color as red[1]. When your pillows arrive, check the sewn-in law label for the fill content. If something looks off, Pacific Coast says it can help identify an older pillow from clear photos of the law and care labels[6].
How the pillow-in-a-pillow works
The Double DownSurround is two pillows in one: an inner pillow of small feathers inside an outer pillow of down. The Amazon description says the inner layer is 95 percent feathers, for resilience and durability, and the outer layer is 75 percent down, for softness[1]. The retailer listing adds detail. It describes duck feathers and duck down inside, an outer layer of at least 75 percent goose down, 550 fill power, 26 ounces of fill, and a 230-thread-count, 100% cotton Barrier Weave shell[4].
Each number tells you something. The outer layer's 75% is exactly the minimum a fill needs to be labeled “down” under the US industry standard[7]. A 550 fill power sits well below the 700-plus that the US standard calls extremely high quality[8], but fill power describes loft, not firmness[6]. The 26-ounce fill weight is the more useful figure, since firmness depends on how much fill is inside and how it's built[6]. Brooklinen, for one, gives no fill weight for its Firm[9], so there's no like-for-like comparison.
In use, you sink into the soft down surround and stop on the springier feather core. The core keeps you from bottoming out, and the feathers sit in the middle of the pillow rather than against your face. Tuck's review of Pacific Coast's related Double DownAround, a gusseted pillow-in-a-pillow, says the design keeps its shape better than most down pillows, though it still needs fluffing regularly. Some sleepers also found it heavier than expected[10]. That's a different model, so treat it as a hint about the design, not a test of this pillow.
This listing comes only in Standard, at 20 by 26 inches[1], the common Standard size that Pacific Coast lists alongside Queen (20 by 30) and King (20 by 36)[6]. If you sleep on a wide bed and like a longer pillow you can hug or bunch, the 3 Chamber Feather DownAround mentioned below also comes in Queen and King[11].
Is medium support enough for a side sleeper?
For an average frame, often yes. For broad shoulders, probably not. The retailer listing calls it a medium support pillow, Amazon's spec table says Medium, and the Amazon description stretches that to “Medium to Firm”[4,1]. The listing calls it ideal for back and side sleepers[1]. Pacific Coast's own guidance is less generous: side sleepers commonly need Firm, while combination sleepers often start with Medium[6].
That makes it best for people who switch between side and back. On your back, the down surround gives a soft cradle. On your side, the feather core supplies most of the height, and whether that's enough depends on your shoulder width. Use our loft guide to estimate the height you need before you buy.
The research against feather pillows applies less directly here. The Australian side-sleeper trial that found feather pillows caused the most waking symptoms tested one generic feather pillow from a chain store[12], not a feather core inside down like this one. Our down guide covers what that trial can and can't tell you.
Fluffing matters more with two layers. Pacific Coast's method is to hold opposite sides, push inward, rotate the pillow and repeat[6]. With this design, the aim is to work the outer down back over the core, so you aren't lying on the feather center with thin down above it. If it still feels too soft after fluffing, Pacific Coast says to choose a firmer, higher-loft or gusseted pillow, and not to cut a standard pillow open to change it[6].
Noise, heat and the HyperClean claim
Because the feathers sit in the core, the surface under your face is mostly down, so expect less crunch than from a feather pillow. The inner pillow uses small feathers[1]. Quills can still work through. Pacific Coast says down-proof fabrics and reinforced seams reduce fill migration, but it makes no zero-migration promise and asks for photos if you find sharp quills[6].
Expect it to sleep a little warm. Tuck lists “doesn't sleep as cool as other, non-down pillows” as a drawback of Pacific Coast's down pillows, while crediting the DownAround's cotton cover with “a decent amount of airflow”[10]. The Double DownSurround also has a cotton shell[1], and a cotton pillowcase keeps that airflow intact.
HyperClean is a cleaning process, not an allergy test. In 2016, Pacific Coast said it washes and rinses the fill up to eight times to remove dirt, dust and allergens[3]. Unlike current Pacific Coast pillows such as the Classic Feather and Down, which lists RDS and OEKO-TEX certification[2], this listing makes no sourcing or chemical-safety claim at all[1]. If ethical sourcing matters to you, that's a real gap; our ethics section explains what the certifications check. If you react to feather pillows, dust mites may be the real cause[13], as our allergy section explains.
Washing a two-layer pillow
Read the sewn-in label before you wash it, because the listing contradicts itself. Amazon's spec table gives the care as “Hand Wash Only” but also lists the pillow as washable[1]. Pacific Coast's current general guidance for its pillows is a cold, gentle machine cycle, then drying on low, air fluff or no heat, with the sewn-in label taking priority[6].
Drying is the hard part, with 26 ounces of fill in two layers[4]. Down can take hours to dry[14]. Pacific Coast's washing guide says to stop the dryer now and then to separate damp clumps, and to keep going until the center has no cool or damp areas, wet clumps or odor. It says to remove internal components only when the product's instructions tell you to, so don't try to pull the inner pillow out. If your machines are too small for the pillow to move freely, it suggests larger-capacity equipment or a bedding care service[15]. A washable protector means you'll need to do this less often[6].
How long it lasts
Plan on one to three years, and fluff it daily to get the most from it. The listing says the feather inner layer is there for “long-lasting resilience and durability”[1]. Sleep Foundation puts the typical life of down and feather pillows at 1 to 3 years[16], while Tuck's review said Pacific Coast's pillows are made to last up to 4 years[10].
With two layers, watch the surround as well as the core. If the down layer has thinned so much that you feel the feather center through it, or the pillow no longer springs back after you fold it in half, it's time to replace it. Our down care guide covers the fold test and how to keep down lofty between washes.
Buying, returns and warranty
Buy through Amazon and Amazon handles any return, not Pacific Coast. Pacific Coast's 180-day return policy covers purchases made directly on PacificCoast.com, and it says Amazon purchases must go back through the original retailer. Its site publishes no universal warranty term, and it reviews defect claims case by case[6].
Because this is a 2-pack, sleep on one pillow for a few nights before you wash either. Pacific Coast's own policy, for comparison, refuses washed items and requires sets to come back complete[6]. Check the return terms on the Amazon listing before you open both.
Who should buy it, and the alternatives
Buy it if you sleep on your side and back, have an average frame, and want a soft down surface that doesn't bottom out. It's also a sensible choice if all-feather pillows feel too crunchy but pure down sinks too far.
Skip it if you're broad-shouldered, need firm support, or want certified down. Alternatives on this site and from the maker:
- Pacific Coast 3 Chamber Feather DownAround: if this listing is unavailable, or you'd rather buy from Pacific Coast directly. It puts fine goose feathers in an inner chamber and down in an outer chamber, rated Medium for side and back sleepers, with RDS and OEKO-TEX certified fill[11].
- Brooklinen Down (Firm): a dual-core down pillow with a Firm option made for side sleepers[17]. Even so, CNN found it packs down to 2 to 3 inches[18].
- Pacific Coast Feather & Down: listed as 95% feathers[19], so it's springier and crunchier, at a lower price per pillow.
- Saatva Latex: the safer choice for broad shoulders, since latex performed best in the main side-sleeper trial[20].
