The best memory foam pillows for side sleepers
The short answer
Shredded memory foam beats solid foam for most side sleepers, because you can tune the height. Our top pick is the Coop Original Adjustable. For a solid, firm contour, get the TEMPUR-Neck. On a budget, the Xtreme Comforts. Hot sleepers should look at shredded or latex rather than solid foam.

Coop ships the Original with about the right fill for side sleepers plus a spare bag, so you tune the loft yourself. That suits side sleepers well, because the right height depends on shoulder width and mattress. Seven editorial outlets name it a top or best-adjustable pick. It has a 5-year warranty, and a 100-night trial on orders from Coop (not Amazon). In owner comments, adjustability is both the most-praised trait and a source of frustration: getting the fill right takes a few nights, and some say it clumps or flattens within a year.
Pros
- Loft and firmness are adjustable: it ships with side-sleeper fill plus a spare half-pound bag
- Mid-priced for a premium shredded pillow, and often on sale
- 5-year warranty, which is long for a pillow
- CertiPUR-US and GREENGUARD Gold certified foam
- Washable cover; works for side, back and stomach sleeping once fill is tuned
Cons
- It takes a few nights of adding and removing fill to get it right
- Initial foam odor reported; Reviewed advises airing it out
- CNN testers found the cover soft but fragile and prone to tearing
- Shredded foam can clump or shift over time and needs fluffing
- Very hot sleepers may want a dedicated cooling model (Eden/Cool+)
- 100-night trial covers orders from Coop, not Amazon

TEMPUR-Neck is a solid, contoured block of dense TEMPUR foam. It comes in three heights, so you pick the one that matches your shoulder width. It doesn't shift, flatten or need fluffing, and owners report pillows lasting a decade or more. Seven outlets list it for neck pain or side sleeping. It's firm, though, and some people need a couple of weeks to adjust. If you choose the wrong size you can't adjust it, and Tempur-Pedic doesn't take pillow returns. Some owners also say newer versions feel firmer than older ones.
Pros
- Ergonomic contour fills the neck curve, a consistent pick for neck pain
- Sized by shoulder width (Small, Medium or Large), so loft can match body frame
- Dense TEMPUR foam keeps its shape, with no fill shifting
- 5-year warranty
- Removable, washable cover; cooling-cover version available
Cons
- Very firm, and some users need weeks to adjust
- Not adjustable after purchase; wrong size means buying again
- Tempur-Pedic doesn't accept pillow returns
- Dense foam can sleep warm
- Amazon availability shifts between single and 2-pack listings

Layla mixes shredded memory foam with kapok, a silky plant fiber, so the pillow is lighter and squishier than a typical shredded-foam pillow. You can mold it into the shoulder gap and remove fill to fine-tune it. Sleep Foundation names it best for pressure relief in its neck-pain guide. Owners praise its comfort and moldability, though testers say it starts out firm and some owners find it dense. Only the cover is washable; the fill is spot clean only.
Pros

- Adjustable and moldable for side, back or combo sleeping
- Several 2026 Sleep Foundation and Sleepopolis awards for side sleepers, neck and shoulder pain
- CertiPUR-US foam

Nest's side-sleeper version of the Easy Breather adds a crescent cutout for the shoulder and a cooling cover over adjustable foam fill with air channels. The crescent comes in one size, with no king; a separate Jr. Side Sleeper is aimed at younger sleepers and travelers. It's a strong design with a thin track record on Amazon so far, and the 30-night trial and 2-year warranty are shorter than Coop's.
Pros
- Crescent shape built for side sleepers, with room for the shoulder
- Cooling Icecore cover plus foam with air channels
- Adjustable fill height
- CertiPUR-US foam; removable, washable cover
- Tom's Guide 2025 side-sleeper award winner
Cons
- More expensive than comparable shredded-foam pillows
- Short 30-night trial (returns must be unwashed, in original packaging) and a 2-year warranty that excludes loft changes
- Tom's Guide's 2026 list ranked TEMPUR-Neck above it for side sleepers

Malouf's Shoulder Zoned Dough is a solid gel-foam pillow with a shoulder cutout. Its zoned columns cradle the head in the center while the firmer edges support the neck. Unlike shredded pillows, it never needs fluffing. The 6-inch loft can't be adjusted, so very broad shoulders may find it low. We found no major independent editorial test, so this is a secondary pick.
Pros
- Shoulder cutout designed specifically for side sleepers
- Zoned foam: soft center for the head, firmer edges for neck support
- Gel infusion and TENCEL cover aimed at cooler sleep
- 5-year US warranty
- Sold and shipped by Amazon
Cons
- No major 2025-2026 editorial review found
- Fixed 6 in loft may be too low for very broad shoulders (one retailer review)
- Not adjustable

Xtreme Comforts gives you Coop-style adjustability for roughly half the price: a bamboo-blend cover filled with shredded memory foam that you can remove to tune the loft. Owners rate its value highly. The trade-offs are a chemical smell in some samples (air it out), messy shreds when you adjust it, and some lumpiness. Wirecutter lists it as its budget pick for shredded adjustable pillows.
Pros
- One of the cheapest adjustable shredded-foam pillows
- Adjustable loft by removing foam
- Machine-washable cover (the maker says to spot clean the foam)
- Bamboo-rayon blend cover
- GREENGUARD Gold certified (renewal confirmed by Wirecutter in 2026)
- Lifetime limited warranty on foam, seams and zippers (not normal flattening)
Cons
- Strong chemical smell for days after unboxing (Reviewed)

Osteo's butterfly-shaped contour pillow cradles the head in a hollow center and supports the neck with raised wings. Flip it for 4.1 or 5.2 inches, and a removable foam insert changes the height by about 0.8 inch. It's a popular, inexpensive cervical option; the listing advertises a 100-night trial, but Osteo doesn't publish the terms. Like any contour pillow, it takes a week or two to get used to, and even with an extra insert it tops out around 6 inches for broad-shouldered side sleepers.
Pros
- Butterfly contour with hollow center keeps the head cradled and the neck supported
- Two heights (4.1 or 5.2 in) by flipping
- Inexpensive, and often on sale
- Removable 0.8 in foam insert lowers it, and Osteo will send a second insert to raise it
Cons
- Contour shapes take some getting used to
- Max 5.2 in may be too low for very broad shoulders
- Amazon advises airing it out 48 hours before use
- The listing advertises a 100-night trial and 10-year support, but Osteo publishes no written terms
- CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX claims are unverified (not in the CertiPUR-US directory; no certificate number)

TEMPUR-Cloud is Tempur-Pedic's softest, most affordable pillow: a sink-in foam that still contours. Tempur-Pedic designs it for back and stomach sleepers. At about 5 inches and very soft, it compresses well below that under the head, so among side sleepers it suits only narrow shoulders on softer mattresses. Broad shoulders will bottom it out. Like most solid memory foam, it holds some heat.
Pros
- Soft, sink-in TEMPUR foam that still contours to the head and neck
- Medium-low 5-in loft suits smaller-framed side sleepers
- More affordable entry into Tempur-Pedic foam
- Sold directly by Amazon
Cons
- Too soft and low for broad-shouldered side sleepers
- Not adjustable
- Memory foam can trap heat
- Return policy for pillows is restrictive at Tempur-Pedic

Is memory foam good for side sleepers?
Yes, especially shredded memory foam, which you can adjust to your shoulder height. Foam holds its height far better than polyester or down, and in a lab trial, foam and latex pillows held the side-lying neck at a significantly different angle than feather did[5]. The catch with solid foam is that the height is fixed, and the evidence says height should match your body[6]. That's why our top pick is shredded.
Judge foam by the height it holds once your head has sunk in, not the loft on the box. In one lab study, about 71% of side-lying necks had settled within 15 minutes on a polyester pillow[7], and slow-sinking foam may still be giving way during that time. Our firm pillow guide covers compressed height.
What memory foam is, and why it feels slow
Memory foam is viscoelastic polyurethane: it flows into the shape pressing on it and springs back slowly. It dates to 1966, when aeronautical engineer Charles Yost developed it under a NASA contract to improve airplane seating. NASA's Ames Research Center built it into a seat that spread body weight evenly and better protected occupants in a crash[8].
In the industry's ball-rebound test, viscoelastic foam returns less than 20%, against 50–60% for other flexible polyurethane foams[9]. On your side, that means your head sinks gradually and ends up lower than the listed loft. When you roll over, your dent takes a while to fill, so a solid pillow can feel flat when you turn back.
Warm softens it, cold stiffens it
Memory foam is temperature sensitive. It becomes more pliable as it warms and firmer, even stiff, in the cold, with the best “memory” action typically between 55°F and 85°F. Humid air softens it too[9]. Most doctors recommend a 65–68°F bedroom[10], inside that range. A pillow delivered on a winter day will feel firmer and taller at first, so give it a day at room temperature before judging it. Tempur-Pedic warns against electric blankets and heating pads on its foam for the same reason[11].

Shredded: the most forgiving
Shredded foam suits most side sleepers because you set the height. You set the height by moving fill in or out: remove a handful at a time until your head sits level (see how to measure your loft), then fine-tune over a few nights. Many are blends. Coop mixes cross-cut memory foam with microfiber[12], and Layla blends foam with kapok. To see how much of a pillow is foam, read the law tag. California requires one on every new bed pillow sold there, listing each fill by generic name, such as “shredded polyurethane foam,” with its percentage by weight[13].
Solid: even support, fixed height
A solid block gives the most consistent support, but only if its height fits you. Buy by shoulder width: the TEMPUR-Neck comes in three sizes for that reason. A soft solid pillow like the TEMPUR-Cloud sinks deeper, so it suits narrow shoulders.
Contour: firm, defined, one position
A contour pillow has a raised neck roll and a dip for the head. It suits people who like firm support and stay in one position, and it's awkward if you turn a lot. Some, like the Osteo, give two roll heights by flipping. Buy one for the feel: the trials below don't show that the shape alone fixes neck pain.
What the trials say about foam and contour pillows
We found no trial showing that memory foam, or a contour shape, beats other well-fitted pillows for side sleepers.
- Contour vs regular foam: 106 side sleepers spent a week each on polyester, foam, feather and latex pillows and a foam contour pillow. The contour showed no advantage over regular shapes, latex did best for waking neck pain, and regular foam performed about like people's own pillows[3]. A companion paper advised against contour foam for people who wake stiff[14].
- Memory foam added to treatment: in a South African trial of 30 adults with chronic neck pain, those given a 4.7-inch (12 cm) memory foam pillow alongside six chiropractic visits improved more on a pain scale than those with chiropractic care alone, but not on a disability score. The maker donated the pillows, and the authors say chance can't be ruled out with so few people[15].
- Pooled evidence: a 2021 meta-analysis found a small benefit for latex pillows and concluded that side-lying alignment may depend more on shape and height than on fill[16]. A 2025 review of five trials (239 people) found no type, foam included, clearly superior for chronic neck pain[17].
One caveat: the Australian trial pillows were molded high-density foam, and the papers don't describe them as memory foam[5]. For the wider evidence, see our neck pain guide.
Memory foam vs latex for side sleepers
Latex is springier, cooler, and had a small edge for neck pain in pooled trials[16]. Memory foam is cheaper, quieter, more cradling and easier to adjust in shredded form. The feel is the real difference: latex pushes back the moment your head lands, while memory foam lets it sink. If you run hot, lean toward latex (Saatva, Eli & Elm). If you want to fine-tune height on a budget, go shredded foam.
Do memory foam pillows sleep hot?
Solid memory foam does, and it's the most-blamed fill for heat in our owner comments. Shredded foam breathes better through the gaps, and gel infusions and cool-touch covers help mostly in the first minutes. Heat matters: warm conditions increase wakefulness and cut deep sleep[18]. Hot sleepers should see our cooling pillow guide.
Off-gassing: what the research measured
New memory foam gives off volatile organic compounds (VOCs), most strongly in the first days. Mattress studies suggest emissions fall over time, and one found levels well below health benchmarks. We found no chamber study of pillows themselves.
A University of Texas team tested 20 new and used crib mattresses, and every one emitted VOCs. Emissions averaged 56 µg/m²h at 73°F (23 °C) and 139 µg/m²h at 97°F (36 °C), close to body temperature, and new mattresses emitted more than used ones. With a heated infant manikin on the mattress, VOC levels in the breathing zone were 1.8 to 2.4 times the room air[19]. A pillow puts foam just as close to your nose.
A second study tracked two new memory foam mattresses in a simulated bedroom for 32 days. Airborne VOCs peaked on day one and fell steadily, with half-lives of roughly 4 to 12 hours for the fast-fading part and about 24 days for the rest. Levels stayed well below health-based benchmarks[20], though that was only two mattresses, tested by a chemical-risk consultancy.
The EPA says VOC effects depend on the compound, the level and the length of exposure, and that not much is known about health effects at the levels usually found in homes. It advises ventilating and removing the source where you can[21]. The foam industry's trade group says memory foam can smell more than conventional foam, and that the odor isn't known to be harmful but may bother some people[9]. How long it lasts varies by sample: one Reviewed tester needed nearly a week to air out an Xtreme Comforts pillow, while most pillows in that test cleared in about a day[22].
- 1
Unbox and uncover
Take it out of the plastic and off the bed, remove the cover, and open a window or run a fan.
- 2
Give it 1–2 days
Osteo's listing advises 48 hours. Tumble shredded fill on air-only, with no heat.
- 3
Return it if it lingers
A strong smell after two weeks is unusual. Use the return window.
CertiPUR-US, OEKO-TEX and GREENGUARD: what each label covers
CertiPUR-US certifies the foam inside a pillow, not the whole pillow. It's worth having, but narrower than many buyers assume.
CertiPUR-US
Certified foam must be made without formaldehyde, ozone depleters, phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and mercury, lead and other heavy metals. Total VOC emissions must be under 0.5 parts per million (the lab limit, 0.5 mg/m³, is stricter), and the foam is screened for flame retardants and other chemicals classed as carcinogens, mutagens or reproductive toxins. PBDE, TDCPP and TCEP flame retardants are banned by name, and viscoelastic foam may lose no more than 10% of its height in a compression-set test[23]. Independent labs test factory samples twice in the first year, then annually, with random spot checks[4].
It tells you nothing about the cover or non-foam fill, such as the microfiber or kapok in a blend. The emissions test measures a foam sample after 72 hours in a lab chamber[4], not a pillow fresh from its vacuum pack, so a certified pillow can still smell when you open it. It sets no minimum density, either[23].
OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100
This is a textile label. Every thread, button and accessory is tested against more than 1,000 harmful substances, with stricter limits for closer skin contact[24]. Check whether it covers the whole pillow or just the cover. You can verify a label number on OEKO-TEX's website[25].
GREENGUARD Gold
GREENGUARD certifies that a product has low chemical emissions into indoor air. The Gold tier sets lower limits, covers more than 360 VOCs plus total emissions, and is aimed at products used around children and in schools and healthcare settings[26].
Do memory foam pillows contain flame retardants?
Federal mattress fire rules don't apply to pillows, and certified foam excludes several flame retardants by name. Both the cigarette-ignition standard (16 CFR 1632) and the open-flame standard (16 CFR 1633) define “mattress” so that it excludes pillows[27,28]. California requires a fill-content label on new bed pillows but no flammability label[13], and CertiPUR-US foam can't be made with PBDE, TDCPP or TCEP flame retardants[23].
That doesn't make foam fireproof. Once ignited, all flexible polyurethane foams can burn vigorously, with great heat and dense smoke[9]. Keep pillows away from candles, space heaters and lamps with exposed bulbs.
Foam density: what it predicts
Density is a good clue to how long foam keeps its height, but it says nothing about how firm it feels. Measured in pounds per cubic foot (pcf), density and firmness are independent: high-density foam can be made soft and low-density foam firm. As density rises, foam loses less height and firmness with use[29]. Viscoelastic foam in household products typically runs 2 to 6 pcf[9]. One caution: additives can raise the density figure without adding durability, and heavy filler loads can make foam tear more easily, so the number that matters is the polymer, or unfilled, density[29].
How long memory foam pillows last
Memory foam usually lasts 2–3 years, longer than polyester but shorter than latex[1]. Dense Tempur foam tends to last much longer, and several owners in our data report 10+ years[2]. Signs a foam pillow is done:
- A dent that stays. If the hollow where your head lies is still there the next evening, the foam has taken a permanent set.
- You're propping it up. Needing an arm or a folded towel underneath means it no longer holds your loft.
- Shredded fill has clumped or crumbled. Fluff it weekly. If fluffing and topping up with spare fill no longer restore the height, replace it.
For a general checklist, see when to replace your pillow.
How to clean and care for a memory foam pillow
Wash the cover, never solid foam. Shredded foam can often go in the machine, but only if the label says so.
Solid foam
Tempur-Pedic says never to wash TEMPUR material. To freshen it, remove the cover, roll the pillow up like a sleeping bag, unroll it, and repeat the other way. Most of its covers can be machine washed cold and dried on a cool setting, though air-drying is best[11].
Shredded foam
Coop recommends washing its inner pillow about once a year. Pin the zipper shut, wash cold on delicate with no fabric softener or bleach, then tumble dry on low, one pillow at a time, until the fill is completely dry. That can take several cycles, so reach inside to check[30]. Damp fill invites mold, and pillows carry plenty of fungi already: a study of 10 used pillows found 4 to 16 species in each[31].
Use a protector
You can't wash solid foam, so a zippered protector does that job. Synthetic pillows with no detectable dust-mite allergen when new reached about 1.1 µg/g within three months of use[32].

Answer four questions to get a loft (height) range and the best-matching pillows from our research.
Not sure? Lie on your side on your mattress and have someone measure the gap between your ear and the mattress. That's roughly your compressed target. Targets assume foam or latex; add 0.5–1 in for down or polyester, which squash more.
Your target loft
