Our take
Coop ships the Original with about the right fill for side sleepers plus a spare bag, so you tune the loft yourself. That suits side sleepers well, because the right height depends on shoulder width and mattress. Seven editorial outlets name it a top or best-adjustable pick. It has a 5-year warranty, and a 100-night trial on orders from Coop (not Amazon). In owner comments, adjustability is both the most-praised trait and a source of frustration: getting the fill right takes a few nights, and some say it clumps or flattens within a year.
Pros
- Loft and firmness are adjustable: it ships with side-sleeper fill plus a spare half-pound bag
- Mid-priced for a premium shredded pillow, and often on sale
- 5-year warranty, which is long for a pillow
- CertiPUR-US and GREENGUARD Gold certified foam
- Washable cover; works for side, back and stomach sleeping once fill is tuned
Cons
- It takes a few nights of adding and removing fill to get it right
- Initial foam odor reported; Reviewed advises airing it out
- CNN testers found the cover soft but fragile and prone to tearing
- Shredded foam can clump or shift over time and needs fluffing
- Very hot sleepers may want a dedicated cooling model (Eden/Cool+)
- 100-night trial covers orders from Coop, not Amazon
What it's made of
The Original is a rectangular bag of chopped memory foam and polyester microfiber that you can unzip and re-stuff. Coop calls the blend medium-firm and says it cross-cuts the foam rather than shredding it, which it claims clumps less[1]. The fill sits in a zippered polyester liner, and the liner zips inside an outer cover of Lulltra, Coop's knit of 60% polyester and 40% bamboo-derived viscose rayon[1]. A queen measures 19 by 29 inches and a king 19 by 35 inches. Every pillow ships with a separate half-pound bag of extra fill[1,2].
Two certifications cover the materials. CertiPUR-US tests the foam for content, emissions and durability, including a total VOC limit of under 0.5 parts per million[3]. GREENGUARD Gold is UL's stricter emissions tier, which caps more than 360 individual VOCs[4]. Neither seal means it arrives odor-free; testers' smell reports are below.
Siblings Kevin and Jin Chon founded Coop, a Los Angeles company, in 2013, and a private equity firm, Topspin Consumer Partners, took a majority stake in 2021[5]. The pillow has gone by other names, including Premium Adjustable Loft, and the company now trades as Coop Sleep Goods rather than Coop Home Goods[6,1], so older reviews may use the old names.
Loft and firmness for side sleepers
Out of the box it sits at roughly side-sleeper height, and the spare bag is how you go higher. Sleep Foundation lists about 6 inches of loft on a new pillow[2]. Healthline reported that it ships with the amount of fill recommended for side sleepers[7]. CNN Underscored's tester, who tried 24 side-sleeper pillows, found the loft near-perfect for most people, smaller frames included, and liked that you add fill rather than dig it out[8]. Older reviews describe a taller pillow out of the box: a Sleepopolis tester found the loft too high, woke with a cricked neck, and slept better once he removed some foam[9].
In Sleep Foundation's testing, side sleepers preferred it at full or maximum fill, back sleepers at about half, and stomach sleepers at about a quarter[10]. Coop's own starting points are to remove a quarter of the fill for back sleeping and a third for stomach sleeping[2]. So for a side sleeper with average or broad shoulders, the realistic range runs from “as shipped” to “as shipped plus some of the bag.”
Testers disagree on whether fill changes firmness or only height. Sleep Foundation says adding fill makes the pillow firmer as well as taller[2]. Tom's Guide found the feel stayed between plush medium-soft and medium-firm however much fill it held[11]. Reviewed's side-sleeping tester removed a fair amount and still found it firmly supportive[12], while Mattress Clarity's tester warned that people who want the push-back of latex or dense foam may be let down[13]. Our reading: more fill makes it denser, but it never becomes a springy, firm pillow. Coop does sell an “Original Firm” refill if the standard blend feels too soft[14], and our firm pillow guide covers the alternatives.
Why tunable height matters is covered in our guide to choosing a pillow. In short, the right height tracks your shoulder width, and in one study of 84 people with neck pain, half improved meaningfully once their pillow height was set individually[15].
How to set it up
Let it expand for a day, start with the fill as shipped, and change one thing at a time. The pillow arrives rolled and compressed. Coop suggests waiting a day before sleeping on it, or 10 minutes in the dryer to speed things up[11]. CNN's tester saw it look flat at first and thicken over a couple of days[8], so don't judge the height on night one.
- Sleep on it as shipped. That is already the side-sleeper amount[7].
- Read your neck, not the pillow. Coop's rule: if your neck slopes upward and your head feels pushed up, remove fill; if your neck slopes down or your head sinks with no resistance, add some[16].
- Shift fill toward your neck. Coop recommends more fill along the part of the pillow that cradles your neck, not just more fill overall[16].
- Work by the handful. Tom's Guide's side-and-back tester added about a quarter of the spare bag and found it still comfortable in both positions[11]. Sleep Foundation suggests keeping a small container by the bed for fill you take out[10], and Consumer Reports suggests sealing it in a plastic bag for later[6].
- Give each setting time. In a lab study of 24 women, most participants' necks settled on a pillow within 15 minutes[17]. Consumer Reports says you may not know what you need for about a month, so adjust every few days rather than every night[6].
Sleep Foundation's main complaint is exactly this trial and error, which can take a few nights[10]. If you are still unhappy after a few weeks, Coop offers a free pillow consultation before you return it[18].
Heat, smell and the cover
Most testers found it close to temperature-neutral, but it isn't a cooling pillow. The Tom's Guide tester never woke hot in four weeks, though she isn't a particularly hot sleeper and the test period had no extreme weather[11]. CNN Underscored's testers said it kept them cool and dry on warm nights[19], and Sleep Foundation's best-pillows team found it doesn't hold much body heat[10]. Sleep Foundation's separate full review disagrees, saying the foam does retain heat and pointing hot sleepers to the Eden[2]. The chopped fill lets more air through than a solid foam block[9], but if you wake up sweaty, start with our cooling guide.
Plan on a few days of foam smell. Reports range from minimal off-gassing on day one (Tom's Guide)[11]to a couple of days (Reviewed)[12] to about a week for CNN's tester, who said it was never overpowering[8]. Sleep Foundation rates its odor potential as high[2]. Air it out before the first night.
The cover is soft and breathable but thin. CNN's tester liked the knit, but her cat put holes in it within a week, something none of the other pillows she tested suffered[8]. Coop says you don't need a pillowcase because the cover is machine washable[1]. If you have pets or snag-prone hands, use one anyway.
Flattening, fluffing and washing
Frequent fluffing is the main cost of owning one. Tom's Guide left a 10-pound weight on the center for five minutes. The pillow took about 10 seconds to recover, and the fill still looked compressed where the weight had been[11]. That tendency to flatten was the only reason it missed a perfect score in Tom's Guide's awards write-up[20]. Sleep Foundation says you may need to fluff it every few nights[10]. Mattress Clarity's tester, who has chronic neck pain, re-adjusted it before bed every night and still woke pain-free[13]. When it sags, Coop's fix is 10 minutes in the dryer[1].
You can wash the whole pillow, but Coop advises doing the inner pillow only about once a year. Pin the liner zipper shut, wash cold on delicate without fabric softener or bleach, then tumble dry on low, one pillow at a time. Drying can take several cycles, so reach inside to make sure the fill is fully dry[21]. CNN's testers ran it through several washer and dryer cycles without trouble[19]. Reviewed counted the once-a-year limit as a drawback for allergy sufferers[12], so if you want weekly washing, wash a protector and the outer cover instead.
Expect a few years, not a decade. Sleep Foundation's general advice is to replace memory foam pillows every 2 to 3 years[22]. Coop sells refill bags for the Original, so a packed-down pillow can be topped up rather than replaced[14].
What our owner data adds
Owners praise the same thing testers do, and their complaints center on fill that moves or packs down. We coded 58 public comments about Coop pillows: 52 from Reddit and six short tester notes from editorial reviews. The group pools the Original with the Crescent, Cut-Out, Eden and latex models, because posters often don't say which one they own[23]. Adjustability was the top theme, in 20 comments, 16 of them positive. The same feature drives the complaints: some owners never find a setting between too fluffy and too flat, and some dislike fill that shifts during the night[23].
Neck pain came up in nine comments: six credited the pillow with relief, and three were negative, including reports of new neck pain or headaches. Durability also came up nine times: owners describe years of use with an occasional dryer refresh, while a minority say theirs went flat within a year[23]. A few long-time owners think newer pillows are worse than older ones. Ownership did change in 2021[5], but we found no evidence of a change to the fill, so treat that as unverified. Recommendation threads skew positive, so read the share of happy owners as a ceiling; our methodology explains why.
Trial, warranty and where to buy
The 100-night trial applies when you buy from Coop, not from Amazon. Coop accepts returns of most items within 100 days with a prepaid label and a full refund, but its policy excludes Amazon, Target and Walmart purchases. For Amazon orders, Coop asks you to contact its customer service[18]. Since our links go to Amazon, check Amazon's own return window before you buy[24].
The five-year limited warranty covers manufacturing defects and damage, not normal wear and tear, misuse or accidents[25]. That makes it protection against a failed seam or zipper, not a promise that the fill keeps its loft. Sleep Foundation adds that the warranty applies only to pillows bought from Coop or an authorized seller[2], so make sure an Amazon listing is sold by Coop, and keep the order number, which Coop needs for any claim[25].
How it compares with other adjustable pillows
Within Coop's range, choose the shape and the fill first. The same fill comes in a Crescent, which Coop aims at side sleepers who roll onto their backs, and a Cut-Out for side-only sleepers[26]; see our Coop Crescent review. The Coop Eden swaps in a softer, gel-infused fill[27,16]. If your shoulders are broad and you want the most height and push-back, the Original is the better Coop.
- Helix ComfortAdjust Cooling: the same add-or-remove idea plus side zippers that change the loft without handling fill, and a cover Sleep Foundation's testers found cool to the touch. Its trial is 30 nights[28].
- Layla Kapok: shredded memory foam blended with kapok fiber, which Tom's Guide found doesn't flatten as easily as the Coop[29].
- Saatva Latex: Sleep Foundation's top side-sleeper pick, with a shredded Talalay latex core inside an outer fiber chamber you can remove to lower it[28]. Choose it if you want latex rather than memory foam.
- Xtreme Comforts: our budget pick if you want removable shredded foam for less.
Who should buy it
Buy it if you want one pillow you can match to your shoulders, and you don't mind fluffing it. It suits average and broad-shouldered side sleepers, and combination sleepers willing to settle on one middle setting. The evidence for it is unusually broad: Sleep Foundation gives it an 8.7 out of 10 test-lab score as its best adjustable pillow[10], and Tom's Guide named it the best pillow of its 2025 sleep awards[20].
Skip it if you want a pillow that is right on day one and stays exactly that way, or if you dislike memory foam's slow hug. Even shredded, it still feels like memory foam, as Sleepopolis's reviewer warned[9]. Very hot sleepers and people who want a springy, firm surface should look at latex or a dedicated cooling pillow instead.
