Does a more expensive pillow work better?
Not in the research we found. Trials compare pillow fill and shape, not price, and the factor that matters most is height. A 2021 review of 35 studies (nine of them high quality, with 555 participants) concluded that neck alignment when lying on your side may depend more on a pillow's shape and height than on its fill[4]. A 2025 review of five trials found no pillow type clearly better than the others for chronic neck pain[5].
The one fill with a consistent edge is latex (rubber). In a field trial where 106 side sleepers spent a week on each of five test pillows and compared them with their own, latex beat people's own pillows in most comparisons, feather did worst, and plain polyester and regular foam performed about the same as the pillows people already owned[6]. A contoured foam pillow showed no advantage over a regular shape in the same trial[6]. None of our budget picks is latex, so if neck pain is your main problem, start with our neck pain guide.
Height is where a cheap pillow can match an expensive one. In a Japanese study of 84 people with neck pain and stiff shoulders, half got a clinically meaningful drop in neck pain after their pillow height was set individually. The “pillows” were a folded entrance mat topped with a cotton towel blanket, raised or lowered one layer at a time[2]. There was no control group and the first author runs a pillow research company[2], so treat it as a promising signal, not proof. It still shows what you're really paying for: the right height under your head, held all night.

Xtreme Comforts gives you Coop-style adjustability for roughly half the price: a bamboo-blend cover filled with shredded memory foam that you can remove to tune the loft. Owners rate its value highly. The trade-offs are a chemical smell in some samples (air it out), messy shreds when you adjust it, and some lumpiness. Wirecutter lists it as its budget pick for shredded adjustable pillows.

- Adjustable loft by removing foam
- Machine-washable cover (the maker says to spot clean the foam)

Beckham's 2-pack is Amazon's best-known budget pillow, and CNN Underscored and Reviewed both name it a value pick. The polyester fill is plush and fully washable, with no off-gassing smell. Its 8-inch loft compresses a lot under the head, though, so average-frame side sleepers do fine while broad shoulders may sink. Polyester flattens faster than foam or latex, so expect to replace it sooner.
Pros
- Very low cost for a 2-pack
- Machine washable and no off-gassing smell (Reviewed)
- Hotel-style plush feel
- Cotton cover
Cons
- Fiberfill flattens over time; may need replacing sooner
- Not adjustable
- May lack loft for broad-shouldered side sleepers
- No published trial or warranty from the brand

- Sizes
- Queen (25.5 x 16.5 in), Standard High (24.5 x 16.5 in)
- Care
- Cover machine washable; never wash the foam
Osteo's butterfly-shaped contour pillow cradles the head in a hollow center and supports the neck with raised wings. Flip it for 4.1 or 5.2 inches, and a removable foam insert changes the height by about 0.8 inch. It's a popular, inexpensive cervical option; the listing advertises a 100-night trial, but Osteo doesn't publish the terms. Like any contour pillow, it takes a week or two to get used to, and even with an extra insert it tops out around 6 inches for broad-shouldered side sleepers.
Pros
- Butterfly contour with hollow center keeps the head cradled and the neck supported
- Two heights (4.1 or 5.2 in) by flipping
- Inexpensive, and often on sale
- Removable 0.8 in foam insert lowers it, and Osteo will send a second insert to raise it
Cons
- Contour shapes take some getting used to
- Max 5.2 in may be too low for very broad shoulders
- Amazon advises airing it out 48 hours before use
- The listing advertises a 100-night trial and 10-year support, but Osteo publishes no written terms
- CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX claims are unverified (not in the CertiPUR-US directory; no certificate number)

Pros
- Two adjustable pillows at a budget price
- Remove fill to tune side-sleeper loft
- Cool-to-touch cover side
Cons
- Cooling claim (4-9 F surface drop) is manufacturer-only
- Shredded foam can clump/off-gas initially (typical)

Elviros is one of Amazon's best-selling budget cervical pillows: a butterfly-shaped foam block with two edge heights you choose between by turning it around. In owner comments, generic contour pillows get praise for neck relief and value, plus complaints about firm foam against the ear and a shape that suits back sleeping better. The 4–5 in heights are low for broad shoulders, and we found no reputable editorial test.
Pros
- Contoured cervical shape with two heights to cradle the neck
- Budget-friendly cervical option
- Removable, washable cover
Cons
- Low loft (about 4-5 in) may be too short for broad-shouldered side sleepers
- No reputable editorial testing found; one low-quality roundup said it degrades fast
- Standard size is small; the brand itself recommends Queen or King for adults
- Terms differ by seller: 100-day returns (no visible use) and a 10-year warranty direct, a 2-year warranty on Amazon

This Pacific Coast pillow is 95% feathers, which support more than pure down, so it holds its height better than all-down pillows at the same price. The fill is RDS-certified and the whole pillow is machine washable. Feather quills can poke and rustle, and medium loft is low for broad shoulders, so fold it or pair it with a thin pillow. Owners praise the brand's quality but say newer pillows aren't as lofty as older ones.
Pros
- Budget price per pillow for an RDS-certified feather/down pillow
- Feathers give more support than all-down (brand)
- Down-proof cotton without coating
- Machine washable
Cons
- Feather-heavy pillows can poke and rustle
- Medium loft may be too low for broad-shouldered side sleepers
- Only 5% down, so it feels like a feather pillow
- Sleep Foundation mention is for a different Pacific Coast model

Amazon Basics sells a medium-density down-alternative pillow labeled for side and back sleepers. It's one of the cheapest 2-packs we list, and Reviewed's tester found it too low for most side sleepers. The microfiber shell runs warm and polyester flattens quickly. It's a placeholder, not a long-term solution.
Pros
- Cheapest option we found
- Medium density version explicitly for side/back sleepers
- Hypoallergenic synthetic fill
- Also available in Queen/King (B0835CCC4V king)
Cons
- Microfiber shell sleeps warmer than cotton
- Reviewed's side-sleeping tester found it too low for most side sleepers
- Likely flattens faster than premium fills

Cost per year: the real price of a pillow
A budget shredded-foam pillow that lasts two to three years can cost less per year than a cheaper polyester pillow you replace every year. The Sleep Foundation puts polyester at 6 months to 2 years and down alternative at 1 to 2 years, against 2 to 3 for memory foam and 2 to 4 for latex[1]. In a small 2019 Consumer Reports test of about a dozen pillows, some budget models supported well out of the box, but many didn't keep their shape[7].
Two caveats. First, cost per year only counts if the pillow gives you the right height. A pillow that's too low on day one is poor value at any price. Second, lifespan depends on how often you use a pillow and how well you care for it, not just the fill[8]. A protector and regular washing (below) push a cheap pillow toward the top of its range.
What budget pillows give up (and what they don't)
Cheap pillows mostly save on the materials that decide how long a pillow keeps its shape, not on the shape itself. The Sleep Foundation's view is that price often tracks material quality and that better materials usually last longer, but that you can find a good pillow at any price point[8].
Where the corners get cut
- Fill type. Polyester is among the least durable fills[1], and Consumer Reports notes it doesn't hold its shape well[9]. Down alternative compresses easily and can need fluffing every day[10].
- Fill amount. Less fill means less height under your head, the one thing side sleepers can't compromise on. Fluffy fills also squash a lot: the Beckham is about 8 inches tall uncompressed, but we estimate it sits at 3.5 to 5 inches under a head.
- Feather blends. Many “down” pillows are mixed with less expensive quilled feathers, so the Sleep Foundation advises reading the label[8]. Feather was also the weakest pillow for waking neck pain in the field trial above[6].
- The cover. A well-made, tightly woven cover protects the fill and helps a pillow last longer[9]. If the cover doesn't zip off for washing, budget for a protector from day one.
What a budget pillow doesn't have to give up
Height and adjustability. A zippered shredded-foam pillow, like our Xtreme Comforts and SUPA MODERN picks, lets you set the loft yourself.
Safety certifications. CertiPUR-US tests foam for content, emissions and durability through independent labs, and lists participating companies in a directory updated weekly[11]. It has also announced a separate shredded-foam program that requires all the shredded foam in a product to be certified[12]. For fabrics, OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 means every thread, button and accessory was tested for harmful substances, and you can check a label's certificate number online[13]. If a cheap listing claims either label, check it with the certifier. Foam chemistry is covered in our memory foam guide.
Cheap fixes before you buy another pillow
If your pillow is too low, you can often add the missing height with things you already own. Find your target height with our loft guide first, then add height one layer at a time.
Layer a folded towel under the pillow
This is the fix closest to the research: the neck-pain study above set height one towel layer at a time, then made sure the pillow sank no more than 5 mm (about 0.2 in) under the head[2]. Put a folded bath towel under, not on top of, a flat pillow. Sleep on it for a night or two, then add or remove a fold. Towels are firm, so the height you add mostly stays put.
Roll a hand towel along the neck edge
Harvard Health advises side sleepers to use a pillow that is higher under the neck than under the head, and warns that a pillow that's too high or stiff can cause morning pain and stiffness[14]. A thin rolled towel inside the pillowcase, along the bottom edge, gives a flat pillow that shape. Harvard suggests a neck roll for back sleepers; using one this way is our adaptation[14].
Fold or stack a thin pillow
Folding a soft polyester or feather pillow in half, or adding a thin second pillow, roughly doubles the height. Put both in one larger pillowcase so the stack doesn't slide apart, and check your head isn't tilted up.
Top up or fluff shredded fill
Shredded foam pillows open with a zipper, so you can add or remove fill. With a shredded 2-pack, you can move fill from one pillow into the other to build a taller one. Shredded foam also needs regular fluffing to keep its loft: hold the ends and work them in and out like an accordion[10].
Revive polyester in the dryer
If the care label says it's dryer-safe, tumble a polyester pillow on low heat with a tennis ball in a tube sock[10]. If fluffing no longer brings the height back, the fill is worn out.
Make a cheap pillow last: protector and washing
A zippered protector and regular washing are the cheapest way to keep a budget pillow clean and make it last. Pillows collect allergens quickly. In a Korean study of 13 volunteers, new synthetic and buckwheat pillows had no detectable dust-mite allergen, but after three months both carried about 1.1 µg/g[3]. In a UK study of 10 used pillows (1.5 to over 20 years old), every one grew Aspergillus fumigatus, and synthetic pillows generally held more fungal species than feather ones[15].
Cheap synthetic fill isn't automatically cleaner. In 81 pillows from 34 New Zealand homes, synthetic pillows carried about seven times more dust-mite allergen than feather pillows[16]. So a polyester pillow labeled “hypoallergenic” still needs protecting. If allergies drive your choice, our down guide compares fills.
What to do
- Use a zippered protector under the pillowcase. It stops sweat, oils and makeup soaking into the fill, which is how it extends a pillow's life[17]. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) recommends zippered allergen-barrier covers for pillows[18]. Skip all-vinyl versions if you sleep hot: they can crinkle and hold heat[17].
- Wash the protector and pillowcase weekly[17]. For dust mites, wash hot if the label allows. AAFA advises at least 130°F[18], and in lab tests water at 55°C (131°F) or hotter killed all mites. A cold wash didn't remove most live mites but still cut allergen by more than 90%[19].
- Wash the pillow itself if the label allows. Most pillows in Consumer Reports' ratings are machine-washable, typically on cold, but foam slabs shouldn't go in the machine[9]. With shredded foam, wash the cover and protector instead.
A protector is cheap insurance for the pillow, not an allergy treatment. In a trial of 1,122 adults with asthma, allergen-impermeable bed covers used on their own made no clinical difference[20].
Signs a budget pillow is done
Replace a pillow when it no longer holds your height, not on a set date. The Sleep Foundation's signs are lumps, sagging, heavy yellowing, waking with a sore neck or shoulder, and allergies acting up at night. For down and feather, fold the pillow in half: if it doesn't spring back, it's done[1]. Cheap polyester usually goes first, at about a year for inexpensive models[10]. For side sleepers, the most useful check is to lie on your side and see whether your neck still sits level. A folded towel can make up a little lost height, but lumps, stains and fill that won't fluff back can't be fixed. General timing for every fill is in our replacement guide.
Are pillow two-packs worth it?
Often, yes, because side sleepers have a use for the second pillow. Beckham, SUPA MODERN, Pacific Coast and Amazon Basics all sell 2-packs for about the price of one name-brand pillow or less. Cleveland Clinic suggests side sleepers put a pillow between the knees to stop the top leg twisting the torso, and use pillows to keep a sore top arm in a straighter, more neutral position[21]. A spare also covers you while the other is in the wash.
One rule: the pillow under your head still has to hit your target loft. Two pillows that are too low are still too low. For a shaped leg pillow, see our knee pillow guide.
Returns: why adjustable beats returnable
Plan to keep a budget pillow, and choose one you can adjust in case your first guess is wrong. Amazon accepts most returns within 30 days of delivery, but the policy covers items in original or unused condition, and it can charge a fee of up to 50% of the item price for returns with obvious signs of use. Items that third-party sellers ship themselves go back to the seller, so check the product page for return eligibility before you buy[22].
That matters because you can't judge a pillow in a few minutes. In a small study of 24 young women lying on their side, about 71% of necks had settled within 15 minutes[23], so a night tells you far more than a quick test. Consumer Reports advises making sure there's a trial period or return policy if you're unsure[9]. Buying direct can get you more time: Coop accepts most returns within 100 days but excludes Amazon purchases[24]. On a budget, adjustable shredded fill does the job a trial would. You can add or remove fill until the height is right.
When spending more is worth it
Spend more when the budget options can't give you the height, support or cooling your body needs.
- Broad shoulders or a heavier frame. Side sleepers usually need at least 4 inches of loft, and possibly more than 6 inches with broad shoulders[25]. Our budget contour picks top out around 5 inches (the Osteo's taller edge is 5.2 in). The shredded picks go higher, but if they still compress too much, a firm high-loft pillow from our firm pillow guide is the better buy.
- Persistent neck pain. Latex (rubber) has the best trial evidence for neck pain[4,6], and no budget pick is latex. See our neck pain picks.
- Hot sleepers. Memory foam tends to sleep warm[8], and most of our budget picks use it. Our cooling guide covers fills that breathe better.
Don't upgrade just to save money over time. Even at 2 to 4 years of life[1], a premium latex pillow still costs more per year than any budget pillow in the chart above. Buy it for support, not savings.
