Our take
Xtreme Comforts gives you Coop-style adjustability for roughly half the price: a bamboo-blend cover filled with shredded memory foam that you can remove to tune the loft. Owners rate its value highly. The trade-offs are a chemical smell in some samples (air it out), messy shreds when you adjust it, and some lumpiness. Wirecutter lists it as its budget pick for shredded adjustable pillows.
Pros
- One of the cheapest adjustable shredded-foam pillows
- Adjustable loft by removing foam
- Machine-washable cover (the maker says to spot clean the foam)
- Bamboo-rayon blend cover
- GREENGUARD Gold certified (renewal confirmed by Wirecutter in 2026)
- Lifetime limited warranty on foam, seams and zippers (not normal flattening)
Cons
- Strong chemical smell for days after unboxing (Reviewed)
- Small shreds are messy to remove
- Can feel lumpy
- Denser and less springy than Coop, per Wirecutter's testers
What you get: fill, cover and sizes
The Xtreme Comforts is a zippered bag of shredded memory foam inside a removable cover, and you decide how much foam stays in. You open the outer cover, then an inner zipper, and add or remove fill until the height suits you[1]. The Amazon listing gives the cover as 65% polyester and 35% rayon derived from bamboo, with the fabric imported, and the Standard size as 26 x 20 inches and 3.4 lb[2]. The pillow comes in Standard, Queen and King, singly or in 2-packs, plus Slim versions that use the same fill at a deliberately lower profile[1].
The listing describes the pillow as firm, says it's made in the USA and calls the cover micro-vented for airflow[2]. Older reviews knew that cover as “Kool-Flow”[3]. Wirecutter, which has recommended this pillow since 2016, says the polyester cover is soft but thinner than the covers on its Coop and Brooklyn Bedding picks and made of noticeably cheaper fabric, though long-term users say it holds up fine[4]. The “bamboo” in the cover is rayon, a manufactured fiber[5]; our Cariloha review explains what that label does and doesn't mean.
One practical gap: unlike the Brooklyn Bedding pillow Wirecutter also recommends, Xtreme Comforts doesn't include a bag for the foam you take out[4]. Have a zip-top bag ready before you open it.
Loft and feel for side sleepers
Full out of the bag, it's tall and dense, so most side sleepers will want to take some foam out. When Reviewed named it the best bed pillow of 2019, the packaging described the pillow as overstuffed. Its testers removed about a quarter of the shredded foam and kneaded the rest until it was even. At full capacity, it eased the neck pain one tester usually got from sleeping[6]. Sleepopolis's reviewer found it naturally firm but pliable, supportive enough on her side that she woke without neck soreness, and so full that adding more foam would be hard[3].
Wirecutter's panel rated it nearly as comfortable as its pricier shredded picks, but found it denser than the Coop and Brooklyn Bedding pillows, which feel springier and let your head sink more. Its foam can feel hard after you've lain on it for a while[4]. That fits how memory foam behaves. It recovers slowly, so your head settles in gradually, and it firms up in a cold room and softens as it warms[7]. The same fill can feel firmer on a winter night than in July.
For side sleeping, the shreds are the point. They can shift away from your shoulder and pack in under your neck, so the pillow fills the gap between your ear and the mattress instead of pushing your head up at one fixed angle. The height still has to be right. Measure your gap first with our loft guide, then adjust toward it. Testers consistently call this pillow firm at full fill, and the brand pitches removing foam as the way to change the feel as well as the height[2].
How to adjust it without foam everywhere
Work in small handfuls over a sheet, and save every piece you take out. Xtreme Comforts says most people get the height right within a night or two of small changes[1]. Testers found it fiddlier than that. Reviewed's tester said the tiny shreds were harder to remove than other pillows' fill, and after each change she had to shake and pat the pillow to spread the foam and get rid of lumps[8]. Sleepopolis's reviewer had foam fall out when she opened the inner zipper, and spent several more nights moving the lumpy fill around to find a good fit[3]. Wirecutter warns that shredded pillows in general shed wisps and chunks while you adjust them, and suggests doing it on a flat surface with a vacuum nearby[4].
- 1
Stand it on end
Prop the pillow upright and press the foam down before you open the inner zipper, so the shreds don't spill out.
- 2
Remove a little
Take out a few handfuls at a time. Reviewed's 2019 testers ended up removing about a quarter of the fill.
- 3
Knead and wait
Zip it up, knead and pat the foam until it's even, then sleep on it for two or three nights before the next change.
- 4
Bag the spare
Keep what you removed in a sealed bag. You'll want it back when the fill settles.
Keep that spare foam. The maker's own warranty describes gradual softening and flattening as something every pillow fill goes through with nightly use[9], and topping the pillow up is how you get the height back. If you've thrown too much away, the brand sells a shredded foam refill that it pitches for reviving flat pillows[2].
The smell, and what the certifications cover
Testers disagree about the smell, so unwrap it somewhere you can leave it to air. Reviewed's tester called her 2023 sample unbelievably smelly. Most pillows in that test aired out in about a day, but this one took nearly a week, and the odor carried onto the sleep shirt she kept under it[8]. Sleepopolis's reviewer also found the smell strong[3]. In Wirecutter's latest round, testers didn't mention any noticeable smell, even straight out of the packaging[4]. The reports span several years and a change of ownership at the company[4], so treat each as one sample.
The listing calls the scent mild and short-lived, and suggests 15 to 20 minutes in the dryer on high or airing the pillow in sunlight[2]. Sleepopolis's reviewer suggested a low tumble cycle instead[3]. If the care tag on yours says low heat, follow the tag. The odor comes from volatile compounds the foam gives off, and in a 32-day study of two new memory foam mattresses in a simulated home setting, airborne levels peaked on day one and fell steadily after that[10]. Our memory foam guide covers what's known about the health side.
On certifications, the label to look for now is GREENGUARD. The maker says its pillows are GREENGUARD certified, meaning UL Solutions tested them for low chemical emissions[1]. GREENGUARD covers emissions into indoor air, and its Gold tier sets stricter limits[11]. Wirecutter dropped the pillow as a pick for a while in 2025, after the company let its certifications lapse during a change in ownership, and reinstated it in July 2026 once it confirmed the GREENGUARD Gold certification had been renewed[4].
Older reviews describe the foam as CertiPUR-US certified[3]. The current listing and the maker's site claim only GREENGUARD, and when we searched the CertiPUR-US directory in October 2026, Xtreme Comforts wasn't listed. CertiPUR-US says it can't vouch for a company that isn't in its directory[12]. Treat CertiPUR-US as unconfirmed for this pillow.
Washing, lifespan and warranty
The cover is machine washable; whether the foam bag is depends on whose instructions you follow, so check your care tag. Wirecutter says both the inner fill bag and the outer cover can go in the washing machine[4], and Sleepopolis's reviewer described the whole pillow as machine washable in cold water with a low tumble dry[3]. The maker's own site is more cautious: wash the cover regularly and spot clean the fill[1]. Its warranty excludes damage from improper washing or drying[9], so if your tag says spot clean, keep the foam out of the washer.
Plan on two to three years from the foam. That's the typical lifespan of a memory foam pillow, shredded or solid, according to the foam manufacturer Wirecutter interviewed[4]. Our coded owner comments run longer. Durability was the theme owners raised most, in 12 of 36 comments, and 10 of those were positive, with many people reporting two to seven years of use and re-fluffing the pillow in the dryer. The complaints were that it goes flat too quickly, and that the King holds its loft worse than the Queen[13]. Some of those comments go back to 2018, so they describe older batches.
On paper, the warranty is long. Xtreme Comforts gives the original buyer a lifetime limited warranty that replaces foam that splits, crumbles or permanently collapses under normal use, and seams, stitching or zippers that fail. It doesn't cover the gradual flattening every fill goes through, comfort preferences, or stains and odors, and it applies only to pillows bought from the brand's official Amazon listings[9]. If the height or feel is wrong, that's a return, not a warranty claim. The pillow comes with Amazon's 30-day return window[4], and Amazon's general policy covers items in original or unused condition, so read the listing's return terms before you sleep on it for weeks[14].
What testers and owners say
Wirecutter has backed this pillow for most of a decade while Reviewed demoted it, and the reasons tell you who it suits. Wirecutter first recommended it in 2016 and now lists it as its budget pick for shredded adjustable foam pillows. In its latest sleep tests, long-time fans still found it consistently comfortable, and it ranked nearly as high for comfort as shredded picks costing about twice as much[4]. Reviewed went the other way. Its 2019 testers named it the best bed pillow and felt no lumps once they'd removed some fill[6]. By 2023 it was the guide's former top pick. The tester still found it comfortable once the fill was right, but the write-up centers on the smell and the fiddly shreds[8].
Our coded Reddit comments lean positive: of 36 first-hand comments, 29 were positive, 3 neutral and 4 negative. After durability, comfort and adjustability came up most, and all four comments about loft were positive. The negatives were about lumpiness and flattening. People who prefer down found it lumpy, some said it went flat, and a few simply didn't like it[13]. Two caveats apply. Recommendation threads skew positive, and we removed a run of near-identical templated comments that promoted Coop Eden and Xtreme Comforts together, because they read as spam rather than owner experience[13]. The charts below break down the themes.
How it compares with Coop and SUPA MODERN
Choose the Xtreme Comforts over the Coop Original when price matters more than polish. Both are adjustable shredded-foam pillows, but the Coop Original blends its memory foam with microfiber, ships with an extra half pound of fill, and carries both GREENGUARD Gold and CertiPUR-US certification[15]. Coop also takes returns for 100 days on direct orders, though not on Amazon purchases[16]. Wirecutter's testers found the Coop springier and better at holding its shape, and the Xtreme Comforts denser[4]. If you like a firm, packed feel, that density works in its favor.
The SUPA MODERN 2-pack is the other budget shredded option we rate. You get two pillows with a foam and microfiber fill and one cool-to-touch face, but the listing says the inner foam isn't washable[17], and no independent tester has reviewed it. If you'd rather skip foam altogether, the value 2-pack pick in our budget pillow guide is the Beckham Hotel Collection.
Who should buy it
Buy it if you sleep on your side, want to set your own height and can put up with a fussy first week. It suits side sleepers who like a firm, dense pillow, and broad-shouldered sleepers who need most of the fill left in. It's also a cheap way to find out whether shredded foam works for you before paying for a Coop.
Skip it if you're sensitive to smells and can't air a pillow out for several days, if you want a soft pillow your head sinks into, or if a confirmed CertiPUR-US listing matters to you. If you run hot, shredded foam is a better start than a solid block, because air moves more freely through the pieces[18], but read our cooling guide before you count on any cover to keep you cool.
