Our take
Beckham's 2-pack is Amazon's best-known budget pillow, and CNN Underscored and Reviewed both name it a value pick. The polyester fill is plush and fully washable, with no off-gassing smell. Its 8-inch loft compresses a lot under the head, though, so average-frame side sleepers do fine while broad shoulders may sink. Polyester flattens faster than foam or latex, so expect to replace it sooner.
Pros
- Very low cost for a 2-pack
- Machine washable and no off-gassing smell (Reviewed)
- Hotel-style plush feel
- Cotton cover
Cons
- Fiberfill flattens over time; may need replacing sooner
- Not adjustable
- May lack loft for broad-shouldered side sleepers
- No published trial or warranty from the brand
What you get: fill, cover and sizes
You get two rectangular, non-adjustable pillows: polyester fiber inside a striped cotton shell. The Amazon listing gives the queen size as 20 x 28 inches with an 8-inch loft, and quotes 1,050 g of hollow-fiber down alternative inside a 100% cotton cover[1]. The fiber is polyester. Tom's Guide describes the fill as 100% polyester fiber[2], and the OEKO-TEX certificate the listing names covers pillows and lists white polyester staple fiber among its fillings[3].
Check the size before you buy pillowcases. This “queen” is 2 inches shorter than the 20 x 30 inch queen size listed by the Sleep Foundation[4]. Beckham says it fits standard or queen cases[1], and the Sleep Foundation notes that a queen pillow in a standard case can gain loft and firmness[4]. That's a free way to add a little height. Standard, king and European sizes are also sold[1]. One listing quirk: the feature list gives the cotton cover's thread count as 250, but the spec table on the same page says 400[1]. Tom's Guide and CNN Underscored both describe a 250-thread-count cover[2,5].
The name causes confusion, too. TechRadar's 2022 review and older listings call it a “gel” pillow with gel-fiber fill[6]. The current listing calls it hollow-fiber down alternative and doesn't mention gel[1]. Reviewed's spec box says “gel memory foam,” even though its write-up describes a fluffy synthetic fill that feels close to down[7]. Beckham also sells memory foam and down pillows under the same brand[5], so make sure the listing you buy says down alternative. This review covers that version.
The listing names an OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certificate for the cotton cover, number BEHO 062282, issued through the testing institute TESTEX[1]. OEKO-TEX's Label Check shows it as valid, held by a bedding maker in Hangzhou, China, in product class I[3]. That's the strictest class, the one used for baby products[8]. It tells you the textiles were tested for harmful substances. It tells you nothing about support or how long the fill lasts.
Loft: 8 inches on paper, far less under your head
The 8-inch figure is the pillow's height with nothing on it, and polyester fiber gives up much of that once your head lands. Tom's Guide set a 10 lb weight, about the weight of an adult head, in the middle of the pillow. It almost flattened the surface where it sat. After five minutes the reviewer lifted it off, and the pillow took more than 10 seconds to recover and still needed a hard fluff[2]. CNN Underscored's tester found she could squash it to half its size with little effort, though it bounced back quickly[9]. We estimate it holds about 3.5 to 5 inches under an average head. That's our estimate from these reports, not a measurement.
Most side sleepers need about 4 to 6 inches of supported height (our loft guide shows how to measure yours), so the Beckham lands at the low-to-middle end. The testers' experience follows body size:
- Small or narrow frames: CNN Underscored's Michelle Rae Uy, who describes herself as petite, called its loft perfect for lighter, smaller-framed sleepers like her[9]. Reviewed's side sleeper, whose frame is on the narrow side, said it kept her aligned[7].
- Broad shoulders or heavier builds: Reviewed warns that broader-shouldered side sleepers may be less comfortable[7]. CNN's Uy relays a complaint from a reader who is 6 feet tall and about 215 pounds and found it didn't support him. Her advice for bigger, heavier sleepers is to spend more on a latex-filled pillow[9].
- Stomach and many back sleepers: Reviewed expects them to feel propped up[7], and TechRadar found it too thick for stomach sleeping[6].
Your mattress moves the target. A soft mattress lets your shoulder sink, so you need less height; a firm one keeps your shoulder high, so you need more. Our mattress section explains the trade. If the Beckham sits slightly low, a folded towel underneath adds height in small steps. Stacking both pillows from the pack adds a lot at once. Our budget fixes cover both.
Firmness and support: why testers split
Testers agree the Beckham feels soft and down-like at first; they split on whether it keeps holding your head up all night. The listing promises a medium-firm feel that holds your head up rather than flattening[1]. Four outlets put that to the test:
- TechRadar had a panel sleep on it for three weeks. It described a soft surface over a fairly firm core. Its side sleeper and heavier back sleeper scored support 5 out of 5, while its lighter back sleeper woke with a neckache[6].
- Reviewed found it more supportive for side sleepers than the other affordable pillows it tested, and far fluffier. Its testers said the fill felt closer to down than the quilt-batting feel of other synthetic pillows[7].
- CNN Underscored called it neither too soft nor too firm and said the dense fill kept the tester's head and neck supported through the night[9]. Associate editor Jillian Tracy, a side sleeper who used it nightly for a year, found it soft enough to sink into but firm enough to hold her head as she tossed and turned[5].
- Tom's Guide liked it on night one, but after the first couple of nights its side-and-back combination sleeper found the support fell short. The fiber compressed under her head, and she woke to reshape it. Tom's Guide scored it 3.6 out of 5 overall[2].
The pattern holds across the four. Lighter, smaller-framed side sleepers who mostly stay on one side report steady support. People who change position or need more height than the compressed fill gives report sinking. That fits our firmness rating of 4 out of 10, on the soft side of medium. If you know you like a firm pillow, start with our firm pillow guide instead.
Heat: the cotton cover does the work
The Beckham sleeps close to neutral for most testers, and the credit goes to the cotton cover rather than any gel. Tom's Guide ran a thermal-camera test with a tester lying on her side for 15 minutes. The surface jumped from 76°F to 89°F in the first minute, then dropped a few degrees and leveled off. Once she got up, it shed 6.7°F in a minute and settled about 2°F above where it started, a neutral feel. Twelve minutes after she got up, it read 77.9°F, slightly cooler than a Helix memory foam pillow with a cooling cover (78.7°F). Flipping it to the “cool side” didn't help: the underside was 1.8°F warmer[10].
The hands-on reviews line up. Tom's Guide's reviewer, who isn't a hot sleeper, stayed temperature neutral and credited the cotton cover[2]. CNN's Tracy runs warm and had no trouble[5]. TechRadar's hot sleepers found it very warm at first, though that eased over time, and its cold sleeper found it too cold[6]. Consumer Reports finds polyester-fill pillows tend to stay cooler than solid foam, and warns that “cool” gel features can trap heat and moisture[11]. If you sleep very hot, our cooling guide covers fills with more airflow.
Durability: the main case against it
Expect the Beckham to need regular fluffing and to lose height within a year or two; how fast depends on whose pillow you ask about. The long-term reports conflict:
- Tom's Guide found the fill flattened night after night and needed a lot of fluffing, and scored build quality 3 out of 5[2]. In its thermal test, the Beckham looked more worn than the Helix pillow after time in the lab[10].
- CNN's Uy fluffs hers each morning, because the fill drifts toward one side or corner overnight[9].
- CNN's Tracy rotated her two pillows weekly for a year and said both stayed as plump as on the first night, with almost no care[5].
- Reviewed's pillows showed no wear, and the fill bounced back after being weighted overnight[7]. TechRadar seldom had to fluff its pair over three weeks[6].
Batch differences may explain some of the split. CNN notes that some buyers find the king size flatter than the queen, and that some repeat buyers say newer sets feel less filled than older ones[5]. For planning, the Sleep Foundation puts down-alternative pillows at about 1 to 2 years and polyester pillows at 6 months to 2 years[12]. It says inexpensive polyester models tend to last about a year[13], and Consumer Reports finds polyester pillows don't hold their shape well[11].
Two habits help. Fluff it each morning by working the ends in and out like an accordion[13]. And rotate the pair, as Tracy did, so neither pillow takes every night. Replace it when it no longer fluffs back to your height; our replacement guide lists the signs.
Setup and washing
Give it a day to fill out, then wash it gently and air-dry it, because the cover doesn't come off. The pillows ship rolled and sealed in plastic[6]. Beckham says to give them a few good shakes and up to 24 hours to reach full loft[1]. Tom's Guide still had to fluff hard after a few hours of airing, but noticed no off-gassing[2]. Reviewed found no smell on opening[7].
The whole pillow is washable, and the care advice differs only in detail. The listing says a gentle cycle and air dry[1]. Tom's Guide's care tag said a cold delicate cycle, then line dry[2]. CNN reports Beckham's advice as cool water, drying flat and fluffing by hand[5]. TechRadar reported in 2022 that a wash and tumble dry didn't deflate its pair[6], but follow the tag on yours. Reviewed's pillows came out of the laundry unscathed[7]. A thick fiber pillow takes a long time to air-dry, so wash one while you sleep on the other.
Between washes, put a zippered protector under the pillowcase. It stops sweat, skin oils and moisture soaking into the fiber, which weighs fill down and flattens it[13]. Wash the protector and pillowcase often and the pillow itself only now and then.
Owners, neck pain and what trials show
Owners mostly praise its comfort and value, and many credit it with easing neck pain, but controlled trials of polyester pillows are less encouraging. We coded 35 Reddit comments about Beckham pillows: 30 positive, 2 neutral and 3 negative. Comfort (13 mentions) and value (12) came up most. All 9 comments about neck pain were positive. Durability came up 8 times, 6 positive and 2 negative[14]. The complaints are about pillows going limp within a year or two, or not supporting enough as an everyday pillow. A few posters were describing Beckham's gel or shredded-foam pillows rather than this one. The charts below break it down.
Read the neck-pain praise with care, because people who name a pillow in a recommendation thread are usually happy with it. In a blinded field trial of 106 side sleepers, waking neck stiffness lasted longer on a trial polyester pillow than on people's own pillows once it started. The authors advised against polyester pillows for people prone to waking stiffness, and the latex pillow performed best[15]. If neck pain is your main reason to buy, start with our neck pain guide.
Beckham vs other budget pillows
Choose the Beckham for a plush, washable, hotel-style pillow; choose something adjustable or latex if you need more height or firmer support.
- Xtreme Comforts Shredded Foam: the budget choice if you're unsure of your loft. You unzip it and remove foam to set the height, which you can't do with the Beckham. Reviewed's tester found it very smelly when new, and it took nearly a week to air out[16].
- Amazon Basics Side/Back: cheaper, but Reviewed's testers said its fill felt like quilt batting, and its side sleeper doubted it was lofty enough for most side sleepers[7].
- Utopia Gusseted 4-pack: four boxy, gusseted pillows for less per pillow, but each is only 18 x 26 inches and spot clean only[17].
- Saatva Latex: CNN's tester likened it to a cross between the Beckham's plushness and a latex pillow's firmer support, and suggested it for bigger or heavier sleepers[9].
- Coop Original Adjustable: the step up Tom's Guide points to, with fill you can adjust, a 100-night trial and a five-year warranty[2].
Who should buy it
Buy the Beckham if you're a side sleeper with a narrow or average frame who likes a soft, fluffy pillow and can use a spare. It also suits guest rooms, where light use hides its short lifespan. Skip it if you have broad shoulders or a heavy build, switch positions a lot, wake with neck stiffness, or want a trial. Beckham offers no sleep trial or warranty[2], so your safety net is Amazon's return window. Most items can go back within 30 days, but in original or unused condition, and a fee of up to 50% can apply to items with obvious signs of use[18].
