Our take
Malouf's Shoulder Zoned Dough is a solid gel-foam pillow with a shoulder cutout. Its zoned columns cradle the head in the center while the firmer edges support the neck. Unlike shredded pillows, it never needs fluffing. The 6-inch loft can't be adjusted, so very broad shoulders may find it low. We found no major independent editorial test, so this is a secondary pick.
Pros
- Shoulder cutout designed specifically for side sleepers
- Zoned foam: soft center for the head, firmer edges for neck support
- Gel infusion and TENCEL cover aimed at cooler sleep
- 5-year US warranty
- Sold and shipped by Amazon
Cons
- No major 2025-2026 editorial review found
- Fixed 6 in loft may be too low for very broad shoulders (one retailer review)
- Not adjustable

How the zones and cutout work
This is one block of gel-infused memory foam with two hole patterns and a recess for your shoulder. On the Amazon listing for this Z model, Malouf describes two comfort zones: larger holes in the center to cradle your head, and smaller holes along the outer edges to support your neck and help align your spine. The shoulder recess is there specifically for side sleepers[1]. Malouf's own site describes the same design as precisely cut columns that give a soft center and firmer edges[2].
The foam is Malouf's Dough memory foam, which the company describes as having a classic sink-in feel. The removable cover is made with TENCEL lyocell fibers, and Malouf lists CertiPUR-US certification for the foam and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for the pillow[2]. The queen measures 16 by 29 by 6 inches[1].
Malouf's reasoning is that your head rests on the softer middle while your neck lies across the firmer rim, so the head can settle without the neck sagging[1]. The evidence that shaping helps is weak, though. In a trial of 106 side sleepers, contoured foam pillows did no better than regular-shaped ones for waking symptoms[3]. A lab study found contour versus regular foam shape didn't change neck posture in side lying[4]. Neither tested this pillow, but both suggest the height matters more than the hole pattern. Our memory foam guide covers solid foam in more depth.
Is 6 inches the right height for you?
The pillow comes in one height, 6 inches, so it only works if that height suits your shoulders and mattress. Malouf lists a 6-inch profile[2] and sells the Amazon version as mid loft[1]. On Malouf's own scale, low loft is about 4 inches or less, mid loft is 5 to 6 inches and high loft is anything above 6. The company says side sleepers generally do best with mid to high loft[2]. That puts this pillow at the top of the mid range.
Two things move the real height. First, the cutout: in principle, a shoulder that slides under the recess needs a little less pillow height than one that butts against a rectangle. Second, the foam itself. Memory foam softens as it warms[5], so your head settles below the listed 6 inches over the first minutes of the night.
Fit is where owners split. In the Malouf comments we coded, two people called their Malouf pillow too tall[6]. At the other end, broad shoulders on a firm mattress may need more height than 6 inches, and there is no fill to add. That matters, because a small EMG study found neck and upper-back muscle activity in side lying was lowest when pillow height matched the sleeper's shoulder measurement[7]. If you aren't sure what height you need, our pillow-height guide shows how to estimate it before you buy.
Firmness and feel
Expect a medium, slow-sinking memory foam feel that stays the same shape every night. Malouf rates the feel as medium, a 3 on its 5-point plush-to-firm scale. Its sibling, the Shoulder Zoned Gel ActiveDough, uses a foam Malouf describes as offering active support and rates 2 out of 5[2]. So on Malouf's own scale, the Dough model is firmer than its ActiveDough sibling.
Because the foam is solid, there is no fill to shift, clump or fluff, and you don't have to reshape it each night. The flip side is that you can't move material to where you want it. Temperature changes the feel: memory foam firms up in the cold[5], so this pillow can feel firmer and slower in a cool winter bedroom. Owner comments on firmness are too few to read much into: two in our coded data, one positive and one neutral[6].
Does it sleep cool?
Treat it as an average-temperature memory foam pillow, not a cooling pillow. Malouf says gel-infused foam sleeps cooler than regular memory foam because gel beads pull excess heat from the body, and that the zoned holes promote airflow[1]. Yet on its own comparison chart, Malouf rates this pillow 3 out of 5 for cooling, against 5 out of 5 for its Shoulder CarbonCool model[2].
We found no independent temperature test of this model. Only one of the 26 Malouf owner comments we coded mentioned heat, and it was positive[6]. If you sleep hot, Malouf's own FAQ points first to its Ice Cloud and CarbonCool lines, though it also calls its gel-infused Zoned Dough pillows a good fit for hot sleepers[2], and our cooling guide covers pillows that tested cooler.
Make sure you are buying this version
Malouf sells several pillows with near-identical names, so check the listing before you buy. The pillow reviewed here is the Z Shoulder Zoned Dough with gel, sold on Amazon as mid loft with a TENCEL cover and a 5-year US warranty[1]. On Malouf's site, the Shoulder Zoned Dough comes in queen and king, with a choice of cooling gel, bamboo charcoal, lavender or CBD infusions. Only the gel version is labeled as sleeping cooler[2].
The same page also sells the softer Shoulder Zoned Gel ActiveDough and the Shoulder CarbonCool, and Malouf's menu lists a Zoned Dough pillow without the cutout[2]. If you want the shoulder recess, make sure “Shoulder” is in the name. Our owner data also mixes several of these models, as explained below.
Setup and care
Let it decompress for up to three days, and never put the foam in the washer. Malouf says to allow 24 to 72 hours for the pillow to decompress, to spot clean the foam with a damp cloth, and not to machine wash it. The cover comes off for washing, and Malouf says to lay it flat to dry[2]. Because the foam can't be laundered, Malouf recommends a pillow protector against sweat, stains, spills and allergens[2]. A protector also helps at return time, because Malouf won't accept stained products[8]. Only one coded owner comment mentioned smell, and it was neutral[6].
Durability, warranty and returns
The 5-year warranty is long, but like most foam warranties it excludes the gradual softening that ends a pillow's life. Malouf's 5-year limited warranty covers defects in materials or craftsmanship. It excludes wear and tear, stains, pilling, improper care and normal changes in softness or resilience. It applies only to the original purchaser in the US or Canada and doesn't cover products from unauthorized retailers[9], so keep your receipt. Malouf itself says a good pillow keeps its best quality for about 2 to 3 years[2].
Owners describe a wide range. Two coded comments praised how long their Malouf pillows lasted, with reports from about 2 years up to 10, while one owner said the pillow went flat during the night[6].
Returns depend on where you buy. Malouf allows 30 days from delivery for pillows bought on its own site, and purchases through other retailers follow that retailer's policy. It doesn't accept returns of products that are stained, cut, torn or otherwise modified[8]. On Amazon, most items can be returned within 30 days of delivery[10]. That is a short window for a fixed-height pillow, so start sleeping on it right away and give it several full nights. Necks don't settle on a new pillow in a few minutes: in one lab study, about 29% still hadn't stabilized after 15 minutes of side lying[11].
What our owner data shows
Malouf owners are mostly positive, and their complaints are mostly about fit. We coded 26 public Reddit comments about Malouf's Z pillows: 17 positive, 4 neutral and 5 negative[6]. The group covers the Shoulder Zoned Dough plus other Z Dough and latex models, so read it as feedback on the brand's pillows rather than on this exact one. Recommendation threads also skew positive, as our methodology explains.
Comfort came up most, in 11 comments, 9 of them positive. Value came up in 7, and none were negative. Three comments credited a Malouf pillow with easing neck pain, three with easing shoulder pain, and two praised its support[6]. The negative mentions were about height (two owners found theirs too tall), comfort (two) and flattening (one owner said it went flat overnight); one comment can touch several themes[6]. That pattern matches the main risk of any fixed-height pillow: it either fits your frame or it doesn't. The charts below break the themes out.
Who should buy it, and who should skip it
Buy it if you are an average-frame side sleeper who wants a solid, set-and-forget foam pillow with room for your shoulder. It fits people who dislike adjusting fill, want the same shape every night and value a long warranty. Its 6-inch height sits within the mid-to-high range Malouf recommends for side sleepers[2].
Skip it if you have broad shoulders and a firm mattress, since you can't add height. Skip it if you have a small frame and find most pillows too tall, since you can't remove height either. Hot sleepers should look at Malouf's CarbonCool or a pillow that tested cooler. And if you want independent test results before buying, note that we found none for this model, which is why our summary calls it a secondary pick.
How it compares
The Malouf trades adjustability for a fixed shape and a 5-year warranty.
- Coop Original Crescent: Coop's adjustable shredded foam fill comes in Classic, Crescent and Cut-Out shapes, with a 100-night guarantee and a 5-year warranty[12]. If you can't tell whether 6 inches suits you, an adjustable cutout removes the guesswork, and the longer trial gives you time to test it.
- Nest Easy Breather Side Sleeper: an adjustable crescent with a cover testers found cool[13,14], but a 2-year warranty that excludes loft changes[15]. Better for hot sleepers; the Malouf is better if you want solid foam and longer coverage.
- TEMPUR-Neck: another fixed-shape foam pillow with a 5-year warranty, but per Fortune it has no trial or returns[16]. Choose it if you want a firmer contour and already know your size.
