Our take

The CPAPMax line is the best-known CPAP pillow. Sleep Foundation picks the 2.0 for neck pain, and Sleepopolis picks the 2-in-1 for stomach sleepers. This version lets you sleep on foam or fiber, remove layers to set the height, and use a gel side for heat. Testers note limited contouring and some new-foam smell. Owners in our small, mixed-model sample were mostly positive.

Pros

  • Two reputable CPAP mentions for the CPAPMax line
  • Choose memory foam or fiber-fill sleep surface
  • Removable layers to set loft for side vs back
  • Side cutouts for any mask type
  • Gel layer + ventilation for heat

Cons

  • Limited contouring/pressure relief (Sleepopolis)
  • Off-gassing when new (Sleep Foundation, 2.0 model)
  • Top-of-head tubing setups may restrict airflow (Sleep Foundation)
  • 45-day guarantee covers direct orders only; retailer orders get a 90-day warranty unless registered within 30 days

Which CPAPMax this is

This is the CPAPMax with Cool Gel, a gel-topped sibling of the CPAPMax 2.0, and reviews don't always say which one they tested. Contour sells both on its own site[1,2]. Both list the same 20 by 13 by 5.8-inch (51 by 33 by 15 cm) size and a quilted, zippered mesh and fiber-fill cover, with a cotton pillowcase sold separately. The Cool Gel version adds a cooling gel layer on the foam side[2].

The editorial picks behind this pillow cover two names. Sleep Foundation's pick for neck pain is the CPAPMax 2.0[3]. Sleepopolis's pick for stomach sleepers is labeled “Contour CPAPMAX 2-in-1 Cooling Plush”[4]. When we checked in October 2026, Sleepopolis's buy link led to the same Amazon listing as this Cool Gel pillow, but the names differ, so its tester may have slept on an earlier version. Our owner comments mix posts about the 2.0 and the 2-in-1, plus one about a 3-in-1. We use all of them below and name the model wherever a source does.

Layers, heights and the two sleep surfaces

Four stacked layers sit inside a two-faced cover, and you set the height by taking layers out. From top to bottom, Contour's listing shows a cooling gel pad, soft memory foam, a removable center foam support layer and a charcoal-infused base foam. One face of the cover is the cooling side over the gel and foam. Flip the pillow and you sleep on a plush fiberfill face instead[5]. Contour calls the foam face the firmer one, suited to warm sleepers, and the fiber face softer and more cushion-like[2].

The listing gives a 5-inch (12.7 cm) “full firm” loft with every layer in and a 4.25-inch (10.8 cm) “medium” loft with the center layer out, and says other combinations are possible[5]. Contour's product page describes four height options from 2 to 5 inches[2]. For the 2.0 it lists 2.25 to 5.25 inches[1]. Sleepopolis also counted four height settings[4]. The 5.8-inch figure in Contour's size spec is an overall measurement; the loft figures are the better guide for setup.

That's the widest height range of the three CPAP pillows we review. It's also part of why Sleepopolis picked it for stomach sleepers: you can lower the loft to avoid straining your neck, and the cutouts on both sides leave room for the mask on your stomach or your side[4].

Setting it up for side sleeping

Start with the full stack on the foam face, then take the center layer out if your neck feels pushed up. Most side sleepers are comfortable on a high-loft pillow[6], so the 5-inch setting is the natural starting point for average and broad shoulders. Our pillow height guide shows how to check.

The contour can push into your neck at full height. One owner in our data took out the thinner white foam layer because “the cervical ridge pushed into my neck too much with it in”[7]. Contour says you can mix and match the foam layers for more height and firmness options[5]. Sleep Foundation, testing the 2.0, found it fairly firm however many inserts it used[3]. So expect layer changes to alter height more than softness. For a softer feel, flip to the fiber face.

Check the cutouts with your mask on. Owners' complaints in our data include a cutout whose size or position doesn't suit every face[7]. Lie on your side, slide your head until the mask cushion sits over the cutout, and see whether your head is still level. If the mask still lands on foam, try another height or shift your position before you tighten any straps.

Width matters if you roll a lot. At 20 inches long it's the shortest of our three CPAP pillows[2], and one owner found a 3-in-1 CPAPMax not wide enough to turn over on[7].

Masks and the hose tether

Of the three CPAP pillows we review, the CPAPMax is the only one with a built-in hose tether. Contour's listing shows a strap it calls the No-Pull Hose Tether, which holds the tubing along the edge of the pillow[5]. The 2.0's page lists a hose tether too[1]. Sleep Foundation says the tether keeps the tube from tugging on or pulling away from your mask[3]. The Sleepopolis tester said “the special strap kept my tubing from moving too much.” He usually finds his hose ends up under his body when he moves, and that didn't happen on this pillow[4].

Contour says the pillow works with nasal, full-face and nasal pillow masks of any brand[2]. The Sleepopolis tester wore a nasal mask: “The cutouts allowed room for my CPAP mask, especially when I was on my side,” he said, and his mask didn't move out of place[4].

One caveat comes from Sleep Foundation's test of the 2.0: if your mask's tubing connects at the top of your head, you may notice restricted airflow[3]. ResMed suggests tube-up masks for people who toss and turn, because the hose stays out of the way[8]. If you wear one, check that the hose isn't bent or pinched against the top edge of the pillow, and route it up over the headboard.

Contour markets the pillow as reducing leaks, but its own page also says it is not a medical device and isn't intended to treat any medical condition[2]. Persistent leaks call for a fit check from your equipment supplier or sleep clinic.

Does the gel side keep you cool?

It feels cool when you first lie down, and the ventilated foam helps after that, but don't expect it to stay cold all night. Contour pairs the gel layer with ventilated foam that lets body heat escape[5]. On the 2.0, Sleep Foundation found all three foam layers ventilated, a charcoal-infused base, and a cover with mesh side panels[3]. Gel feels cool to the touch and pulls heat from your skin[9], but a thin layer under your cheek warms up as it absorbs heat. Our cooling guide explains why the effect fades.

The fiber face has no gel, so flipping to it trades cooling for softness. Heat came up once in our coded owner comments, from an owner who found a 3-in-1 model hot[7]. Even so, this is the only one of our three CPAP pillows with a cooling layer, and it has the highest cooling score of the three on our scale.

There's one relevant data point from research. In the only controlled trial we found of cutout CPAP pillows, people liked a gel pillow more than a foam pillow or their own, even though leak and hours of use didn't differ. That was a different gel pillow, made by a company that helped fund the study[10]. It suggests gel can make the pillow more pleasant, not that it improves therapy.

Firmness depends on which side is up

Testers disagree about how firm it feels, and the two faces explain most of that. Sleepopolis's tester found a plush, poofy feel and scored comfort 3 out of 5. “It did feature memory foam, but it didn't offer fantastic contouring,” he said, adding that neither side had much of a memory foam feel[4]. Sleep Foundation rated the 2.0 medium firm and found it fairly firm with any number of inserts[3]. One owner in our data called it super firm, firm enough to lie on the edge[7].

We rate it 5 out of 10, the softest of our three CPAP pillows, because the fiber face is there if you want it. Sleep Foundation still picked the 2.0 for neck pain and singled out the removable foam layers, which let you lower the profile to suit your sleep position[3]. If you want a pillow that cradles your head, though, the Sleepopolis tester's comments on contouring suggest the firmer, fixed-contour Lunderg is the better bet.

Expect a smell at first. Sleep Foundation noted strong off-gassing when the 2.0 was new. It fades, but people who are sensitive to smells may struggle for the first few nights[3]. Unzip the cover and air the foam layers out before your first night.

What owners say about the CPAPMax

Owners in our sample were mostly positive, and comfort was what they mentioned most. We coded 20 public Reddit comments about CPAPMax pillows. Sixteen were positive, three neutral and one negative. Comfort came up in 12, every time positively, and adjustable layers came up in three[7]. The complaints are the ones covered above: the cutout's fit, heat, and the neck ridge at full height.

Read those numbers carefully. Twenty comments is a small sample, it mixes the 2.0, 2-in-1 and 3-in-1 models, and people recommending a pillow in a Reddit thread are more likely to be happy with it. Some owners credit the pillow with fewer leaks, and one says leaks usually stay under 5 liters a minute[7]. Your machine's own data is a better guide than anyone's anecdote, and the controlled trial found no leak difference for people on nasal masks[10]. If your leak numbers stay high, see when to go back to your sleep clinic.

Cleaning, returns and warranty

The cover goes in the washing machine; the foam layers don't. Contour's listing says to remove and machine wash the cover, spot clean the foam only and let it air dry, and follow the care label[5]. Sleepopolis found the cover washes well, but it isn't water- or stain-resistant and there's no spare in the box[4]. Contour sells cotton pillowcases separately[2]. It also sells a replacement cover that fits the original, 2.0 and Cool models[11].

Buy direct if you want a sleep trial. Contour offers a 45-day comfort guarantee on orders from contourliving.com, with a full product refund[2]. You need a return authorization and a short survey. You pay return shipping, and the refund covers the product price but not the shipping you paid originally[12].

Warranty depends on where you buy. Orders from Contour's site are registered automatically. The standard term is one year, and the warranty page lists two years for Contour CPAP pillows, though the product page still says one year[13,2]. Orders from authorized retailers get a 90-day limited warranty unless you register the pillow within 30 days of purchase to extend it to a year. The policy also says warranties don't extend to reseller sites such as Amazon unless the pillow was bought new from Contour. Normal wear and tear isn't covered[13]. If you buy anywhere but Contour's site, register within 30 days and keep your receipt. The listing says the pillow is FSA and HSA eligible[5].

CPAPMax vs Lunderg vs EnduriMed

Choose the CPAPMax for adjustability, a hose tether and a cooler or softer face. Choose the Lunderg for firm support, or the EnduriMed for a full-face mask.

  • Lunderg: firmer, one solid foam shape with two neck heights, 5.5 inches tall with its layer, and two machine-washable cases in the box[14]. Its own returns require an unused pillow[15]. Sleepopolis named it best overall[4].
  • EnduriMed: gaps at all four corners for full-face masks, a removable pad, one cover[16,4], and a 30-day maker return window minus return shipping[17].

Buy the CPAPMax if you switch between your side and stomach, want to fine-tune height, sleep warm, or keep waking up with the hose under you. Buying direct also gets you the longest maker trial of the three.

Skip it if you sleep on your back and want deep neck contouring, roll across a wide pillow all night, or wear a tube-up mask and don't want to fuss with hose routing. If you're still deciding whether you need a CPAP pillow at all, start with our CPAP pillow guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is the CPAPMax Cool Gel the same as the CPAPMax 2.0?

Close, but not identical. Contour lists the same 20 by 13 by 5.8-inch size and mesh and fiber-fill cover for both. The Cool Gel version adds a cooling gel layer on the foam side[2,1].

Which side of the CPAPMax should I sleep on?

The gel and memory foam side is firmer and cooler. The fiberfill side is softer and more like a traditional pillow[2]. Try the foam side first if you sleep warm, and flip it if it feels too firm.

How do I change the CPAPMax's height?

Unzip the cover and remove or rearrange the foam layers. Contour's listing shows 5 inches with every layer in and 4.25 inches with the center layer out[5], and Contour says the range runs from about 2 to 5 inches[2].

Can you wash the Contour CPAPMax?

The cover is removable and machine washable. The foam layers are spot clean only and should air dry[5].

Is the CPAPMax good for stomach sleepers?

It's one of the better CPAP options for stomach sleepers. Sleepopolis picked it for that position because you can lower the loft and the cutouts on both sides leave room for the mask[4].

Does the gel side stay cool all night?

Probably not. Gel feels cool at first and draws heat away[9], but a thin layer warms up as you lie on it. The ventilated foam keeps helping after that[5].
