Our take

LAYR swaps loose fill for three separate inserts (soft, medium and firm) that you stack in different combinations. That gives broad-shouldered side sleepers stable height from the firm foam layer, while others can go soft and low. AARP names it Best Overall for side sleepers, and Sleepopolis and NBC Select also list it. It's pricey, there's no published warranty, and finding your stack takes trial and error.

Pros

  • Most customizable pillow in the set: three inserts can be combined for soft to firm and low to high loft
  • Firm foam inserts give broad-shouldered side sleepers stable height
  • Each insert has its own washable cover
  • Bamboo viscose outer cover
  • Picked by AARP, Sleepopolis, NBC Select and Fortune in 2025-2026

Cons

  • No warranty listed
  • Short 30-day return window, and change-of-mind refunds lose the return shipping cost
  • Expensive
  • Trial and error needed to find the right insert stack
  • Some reviewers note heat retention

How the three inserts work

LAYR is a zippered outer cover holding three separate inserts, and you set its height and feel by choosing which inserts go in and in what order. The soft insert is filled with down-alternative fiber. The medium insert mixes gel-infused shredded memory foam with the same fiber. The firm insert is gel-infused memory foam[1]. That firm insert isn't one block: Mattress Clarity's Tony Klespis found two slabs inside it, one 1 inch and one 2 inches tall[2]. So you get an extra step between “firm insert in” and “firm insert out.”

Each insert sits in its own thin cotton case, and all of them go inside an outer cover made with viscose from bamboo[1]. The Amazon listing gives that outer fabric as 60% polyester and 40% viscose from bamboo[3]. LAYR arrives set up with the soft insert on one side and the medium insert on the other, so you can flip it for a softer or firmer face before you touch the firm insert[4]. The standard size measures 17 by 24 inches and the king 17 by 34 inches, and the height depends on your configuration[1]. NCOA notes the standard still fits a standard pillowcase[5].

LUXOME says the memory foam is CertiPUR-US certified and lists a STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX certificate for the pillow[4]. What this design gives a side sleeper is separate control of height and surface feel. In a single-chamber fill pillow, height and firmness move together: Nest, for example, says more fill gives its Easy Breather a higher, firmer profile[6]. With LAYR you can put firm foam underneath for height and keep a softer insert on top, which is how LUXOME tells you to start: two inserts, with the one whose softness you want on top[4].

Building a side-sleeper stack

Most side sleepers will end up with the firm insert at the bottom and the medium or soft insert on top, then fine-tune by pulling one foam slab or some fiber. LUXOME's instructions are to start with two inserts, mix and match until the height and firmness feel right, then remove or replace fill inside each insert. It warns that finding your setup can take a few days[4]. Most people use two of the three inserts, the company says[1].

Testers who published their setups give you good starting points:

  • Medium over firm, minus one slab. Klespis, a heavyweight side sleeper, found the medium insert on top of both firm slabs immediately too tall. Taking out the 1-inch slab made it comfortable. He suggests keeping that slab if your shoulders are broader than his[2].
  • Tall for broad frames. AARP's older-adult testers said the higher loft filled the gap between shoulder and head, and LAYR earned a 5 out of 5 for side-sleeping pressure relief[7]. Fortune's tester, Beth, also recommends a higher-loft build for side sleepers[8].
  • Small frames. For people under 130 pounds, Klespis suggests sticking with the soft and medium inserts, or using the 2-inch slab if you like a firm pillow[2].

The range is wide. NCOA measured the pillow at 9.5 inches tall with every insert in and 6 inches with inserts removed[5]. Those are heights for the pillow alone, before your head compresses anything. On his side setup, Klespis felt his head sink in a little while the firm layer kept him from bottoming out[2]. His experience suggests the foam slabs set your base height and the insert on top sets how far you sink.

Give each stack a fair test. In one lab study, only 70.8% of side-lying necks had settled within 15 minutes on a test pillow[9], so judge a combination over a night or two, not a few minutes. The payoff can be real: among 84 people with neck pain, half reported a clinically important improvement after their pillow height was individually adjusted[10]. No study has tested LAYR itself. To estimate your target height before you start, see how to choose a pillow.

Firmness and feel

LAYR feels like memory foam under a fiber top layer, and it responds slowly. Klespis describes the soft insert as plush with little support, the medium as firmer with a slow-moving feel, and the firm slabs as classic slow memory foam[2]. Fortune's tester found the pillow not very responsive, with no bounce to help you change positions, and thought combination sleepers may struggle to find one setting for every position[8]. Mattress Clarity disagrees on that point and lists combination sleepers among the people likely to enjoy it[2]. Either way, if you turn from side to side all night, expect the foam to take a moment to reshape each time.

Temperature changes the feel too. Memory foam softens as it warms and firms up in the cold[11], so a stack that feels right in summer can feel firmer in a cool winter bedroom. Two small comfort notes from testers: Sleepopolis's Matt Schickling found the cover thick but stretchy, and warned you may feel the zipper if you drift to the pillow's edge[12]. AARP's 62-year-old tester Bryan said it kept his head and neck in place, though it folded in on his face a little when he lay on his stomach[7].

Does it sleep hot?

Testers disagree, and the two instrument tests lean warm, so expect average heat rather than a cold pillow. LUXOME markets LAYR as cooling, pointing to the bamboo-viscose cover and the gel-infused foam[1]. Sleepopolis named it its best cooling pillow for side sleepers[12]. Klespis, who calls himself a textbook hot sleeper, never felt it was going to overheat[2].

The two outlets that used a thermal gun were less impressed. AARP measures the surface before and after a tester lies on it for one minute; LAYR retained 12 degrees of heat, which AARP rates as average[7]. NCOA measured a 17-degree rise with all inserts in, against 10 to 14 degrees for most pillows it tested, and lists heat retention as a con[5].

The two kinds of result measure different things. A surface reading shows how quickly the top of the pillow warms under your head; a tester's verdict also reflects their bedding, room and tolerance. NCOA tested the tallest build, with all the foam in, and nobody has published a reading for a two-insert stack. Our cooling score of 6.5 reflects that mixed picture. If heat is your main problem, start with our cooling guide.

Smell, care and durability

Expect a faint foam smell for about a day, and plan to wash the covers, not the fill. LAYR ships compressed in plastic. Klespis says it takes from a few minutes to an hour to expand, with a faint chemical smell that should fade within about 24 hours[2]. LUXOME says it airs its memory foam and rotates it daily for five days before packing to cut the initial odor[3].

The outer cover and the insert covers can be machine washed on a gentle cycle with like colors, but all fill must come out first. Tumble dry on low or no heat to limit shrinking[13]. The fill itself isn't machine washable[12]. LUXOME suggests storing spare inserts and fill in the box[13], and Fortune's tester noted the pillow comes with extra bags for removed fill[8]. Keep them. Spare fill is how you top up an insert later.

Long-term durability is the open question. None of the reviews we read reports long-term use, and LUXOME doesn't offer a warranty on LAYR[2,8]. Klespis expects it to last the two years or so he suggests for most pillows, helped by the washable covers[2]. We haven't coded enough owner comments on this model to chart, so this page has no owner-sentiment section.

Trial, returns and warranty

You get 30 days and no warranty, so test the likely setups early. LUXOME's return window is 30 days from delivery. For a change-of-mind return in the US or Canada it sends a prepaid label but deducts the return shipping cost from your refund; exchanges get a free label. Returned items must be clean, undamaged and in like-new condition[14]. Mattress Clarity describes the 30 nights as LUXOME's “Perfect Pillow” guarantee, with return shipping covered and a full refund for factory defects[2]. If you buy on Amazon, that order follows Amazon's return policy, under which most items can be returned within 30 days of delivery[15].

Thirty days is short for a pillow its maker says can take days to set up. Try your two or three most likely side-sleeper builds in the first two weeks, so you still have time to send it back. For comparison, the Coop Original Adjustable comes with a 100-night guarantee and a 5-year warranty[16].

Who should buy it, and who should skip it

Buy LAYR if you sleep mostly on your side, want firm foam height under a softer surface, and don't mind experimenting. It suits:

  • Broad-shouldered side sleepers who need tall, stable height. The firm slabs give it without overstuffing a fill pillow, and AARP's side-sleeping testers gave it top marks for pressure relief[7].
  • Side sleepers with neck pain who want to change height in small steps. Chiropractor Matthew Cavanaugh recommended it to NBC Select as both supportive and cooling[17]. For what else helps, see our neck pain guide.
  • Side sleepers who sometimes lie on their stomach and will rebuild it low. Fortune suggests the soft insert alone for stomach sleeping[8], and NCOA named LAYR its best overall pillow for stomach sleepers[5]. More in our side and stomach sleepers guide.

Skip it if you want a warranty, a long trial or a pillow that works straight out of the box. Skip it too if you sleep hot and want a pillow that measures cool, or if you change position all night and want a springy surface. Testers flagged heat retention and slow response[5,8].

LAYR vs other adjustable pillows

LAYR offers the finest control of any pillow we cover, but simpler pillows with longer trials suit most side sleepers.

  • Coop Original Adjustable: one chamber of shredded memory foam and microfiber that you add or remove, with a 100-night guarantee and a 5-year warranty[16]. Mattress Clarity says LAYR gives you more loft and firmness options and uses gel-infused foam where Coop's isn't[2]. Pick Coop for simple adjustment and better terms; pick LAYR for firm foam height under a soft top.
  • Coop Original Crescent: the same Coop fill in a curved shape for the down-side shoulder, sold in queen and king[16]. Better if your shoulder keeps pushing a rectangular pillow away.
  • Nest Easy Breather Side Sleeper: adjustable fill in a crescent, with a cover that testers at Tom's Guide and CNN Underscored found cool[18,19]. Choose it over LAYR if heat matters more than fine control.
  • TEMPUR-Neck: a fixed-shape TEMPUR-Material foam pillow with a 5-year warranty but, per Fortune, no trial or returns[8]. It suits people who already know the height they need.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best LUXOME LAYR setup for side sleepers?

Start with the firm insert at the bottom and the medium or soft insert on top; LUXOME says to begin with two inserts, the softer one on top[4]. Mattress Clarity's heavyweight tester found that too tall with both firm slabs in, so he removed the 1-inch slab; he suggests keeping it if you have broader shoulders[2]. Give each setup a night or two before changing it.

How tall is the LAYR pillow?

It depends on the inserts. NCOA measured 9.5 inches with all three inserts and 6 inches with inserts removed[5]. The firm insert holds two foam slabs, 1 and 2 inches thick[2], so you can change height in small steps.

Is the LUXOME LAYR good for shoulder pain?

It can be, if you build it tall enough to fill the gap between your shoulder and head. Sleepopolis lists it among its best pillows for shoulder pain[20], and AARP's testers gave it top marks for side-sleeping pressure relief[7]. It has no shoulder cutout, so a crescent pillow may suit you better if your shoulder pushes the pillow away. See our shoulder pain guide.

Can you wash the LUXOME LAYR?

You can wash the outer cover and the insert covers on a gentle cycle after removing all the fill, then tumble dry on low or no heat[13]. The fill itself is not machine washable[12].

Does the LAYR have a warranty?

No. LUXOME does not offer a warranty on LAYR[2]. You get a 30-day return window from delivery, and change-of-mind refunds have the return shipping cost deducted[14].
